Project Xbox Scorpio’s 12GB of Memory Puts No “Technical Limit” For Games Development, Says Developer

It will take a couple of years before Scorpio’s capabilities are full maximized, says Brad Wardell.

If there is one thing that sets the Scorpio truly apart from current gen consoles is its massive boost in memory. The Xbox Scorpio features 12GB of memory, 8 of which are available for games. The pending 4GB of memory will be utilized for OS tasks, applications, video encoding and other miscellaneous processes. In other words, the Scorpio features drastically more memory than Xbox One and even the PS4 Pro, and this is something that Stardock CEO Brad Wardell has acknowledged on his Twitter feed.

“12GB of GDDR5 memory means (for some years) no real technical limit on games,” he said on his Twitter page. He also revealed that it will take a fewΒ years for developers to max out the Scorpio’s technical prowess. “And it’ll take a couple years to make a AAA level core-neutral game to fully utilize the power like Scorpio and APIs like DX12/Vulkan,” he further stated.

Project Scorpio is due to release this Holiday. The console’s official name and price point haven’t been revealed yet. For more on Scorpio, read our in-depth interview with Brad Wardell by clicking here.

Uh oh. Ya’ll pissing on Sony’s territory for the past 3.5 years and then some. Get ready for a comment feud.

    • crazy_black_man-

Sony’s territory is “quality console hardware” and “a HUGE variety of gaming genres, with great exclusive games”, and so as of right now, the Scorpio is only in competition with the Xbox One. All I’m hearing right now is that it’s going to beat the living crap out of the Xbox One power wise, but lets be realistic, it is in no way going threaten the PS4 install base at all. Its far too late for that. Those that haven’t upgraded to the Pro are probably just going to wait to hear the news in the next few years of what the PS5 has to offer. Microsoft is basically just trolling their own Xbox One customers with the Scorpio. Sony’s console base is pretty much solidified by now. Once the Pro gets its eventual price drop, and those 2017 exclusives start shipping, the numbers could get even worse for MS to recover this gen. The PS4 Pro is not beholdened to just offering the best performing 3rd party games like the Scorpio “supposedly” is. And that Omar, is your console war lesson for today. Do your homework son.

So everyone that went to the ps4 this gen is now a solid loyal PS fan for life? Sorry, that’s not how it works. Even sony by releasing the pro saw there is a market and demand for a higher spec machine.

MS will pull some people who left their 360 behind back to their brand. Then there are those that simply didn’t upgrade due to both the x1 and ps4 not offering a big enough leap in power over the last gen.

Lets not forget 4k TV’s are selling at a faster rate than reg HD did at this point in it’s lifespan. There are people upgrading to that and will want a truly powerful machine to take advantage of it.

I wouldn’t bet on this giving MS the biggest market share, but to think that it won’t make a dent is ignorant.

Your class is discontinued, tenure denied.

    • Psionicinversion

To be fair 4k TVs are selling so fast because they are now cheap enough that 1080p TVs can cost the same or slightly less. If your a 4k netflixer or gamer there’s less reason to own one but it’s the future so why not

    • Omar

My dude, u are so eager for an argument that u’ll pick a fight without even paying attention to the initial comment. It’s obvious that u are a fan boy (an educated one nonetheless) and in Sony’s bias camp. If u read my comment, it doesn’t indicate that I need teaching of any lessons. I was just pointing out that the argument of superior hardware is what has been the case for the past 3 years. As I stated to u in a previous thread, I’m well aware of Xbox’s deficit in top tier exclusives and short of Sony deciding to say eff consumers, their favor in EU and JP make their sales lead insurmountable. U make very valid points but u should be arguing with someone who starts one. Now to finish off, don’t act as if a significant power difference means absolutely nothing. It probably won’t hurt Sony much (if at all) but it can help MS in the perception of their fans. Remember, lots of people who loved Xbox left them because of the XB1. They’d be happy just to get some of them back, regardless as to being #1 in sales.

    • raymond webb

He meant 12gb total and 8gb designated to just gaming. A video card might have 8 but it has to share it with the operating system which is by far a bigger strain on the memory. I mean Microsoft allotted 4gb strictly for the operating system itself.

    • Riggybro

Operating system using VRAM on PC… you sure about that?

    • cas home

Your very misunderstood. Video cards come with amount of ram for each resolution scale example, gtx 1060 is for 1080p, gtx 1070 is for 2k x 1440p, and gtx 1080 is for 4k range all at ultra settings ( note depending on the game most games still can’t do 4k with the gtx 1080 at ultra settings) . The ram on video cards has nothing to do with any kind of sharing with the Operating system that is why ram comes with the motherboard. On board ram is used for the Operating system along with other programs/ games included.. You only need 8 gigs of system ram to run a game.

The scorpio is only going to have 4 to use out of the 12 which is pointless. The gpu is not even strong enough to do native 4k gaming at ultra settings by not being able to beat the gtx 1060 in games. The only way you can do 4k gaming is if the settings are lowered making games look like crap or just decent not at it’s best. There is a reason why Phil Spencer went back on his word saying how it’s up to the developers to run titles at 4k or less and how scaling may be involved from the new specs update. It’s not that they have a choice, the true fact is it’s just not going to happen..

The Scorpio is just a low end pc that can only do 1080p ultra settings and games with a weak game engine like ” forza ” are the only titles your going to see running at native 4k with just a few ultra settings( not all to have enough frames)..Over all big titles like Mass Effect Andromeda can’t even do 4k native with a gtx 1080 it on ultra settings at 60 frames so it’s just don’t make any since why this system is getting so much hype.

    • Learned Handgun

Of the PC gaming community, what percentage do you think has the sort of setup you just described?

    • Generalkidd

Ummm no, the Scorpio does beat the 1060 and is pretty close to the 1070 based on what we know right now. And with your usual console optimizations, we’ll probably be seeing GTX 1070 levels of performance in games. Besides, most PC gamers don’t have a build more powerful than Scorpio. According to Steam’s hardware survey, a large percentage of PC gamers are gaming on Intel HD Graphics.

Funny but wrong and we all know it. Unscaled 1080p and 4K have subtle differences and most people who don’t play in 4K often would need a side by side to see the difference. Don’t get me wrong it is funny but only because it is an extreme example but Scorpio will use upscaling tech as well and Xbox Gamers make fun of the difference in tech between the best PS could do last year and what Xbox can do this year then PS Gamers will make the same comparison when the next PS comes out. What kills me is it is way early to make a PS5 and they already made the Pro so what’s next the PS4 Pro2, still would be to early just what last year and then a new major upgrade again next if they announced this year to keep up. Even then I dont think they could keep games compatible because they have not even got “boost mode” working with all games and that is a marginal upgrade compared to what Xbox has done.

    • angryguy77

What I posted is what Sony fans have been doing since 2013.

“Unscaled 1080p and 4K have subtle differences and most people who don’t
play in 4K often would need a side by side to see the difference. ”

Yet according to many ps fans(not saying you), the difference between 900 and 1080 was huge.

    • Billy

First lets get this strait I play across the board, PC, Xbox, PS, Nintendo everything I even have more than one tablet so that I can compare apps and quality, so never lump me in with PS
Fans, I have a system I prefer but I don’t say it that often. Next I wanted to illustrate that we should be above all of that, all gamers should but keeping the cycling going no matter who started it and I have been around along time long before the internet was the internet, and I will tell you that things like that don’t do any real thing but stir people up because most “FANS” get offended when comparisons are made like that. Now as for 900p and 1080p depending on the screen size can be massive but unscaled 4K fills in 1/2 of the pixels it dose not have so that the actual difference is small enough that unless you know 4K or have a side by side you wont know the difference. However on the Xbox One even though it has more gb/s game makers had to use tech to outline targets and objects because of the difference. (I forget what the actual technique is called) Now when 4K is more common and FreeSync is actually put on a TV and not a monitor then the difference will be much larger but as average consumer tech is now the difference is small enough not to make that big a difference, yet.

    • Learned Handgun

The 900p vs 1080p difference is not massive. If you look at the games side by side, you also won’t notice much of a difference. This has been shown by almost every digital foundry video.

    • Eddie Battikha

Fall 2019 is Playstations 25th Anniversary and that’s when PS5 will launch, a 4k next gen console with all the bells and whistles.

    • Billy

2019 would be an ok to for them to release a new console, with the exception of what they told us the life span of the PS4 Consoles would be, so when would it be by what they said? I would not mind it in 2019 but it would put them in the position of lying, but that would just be one more time they did so. Like when the Pro program was announced it was going to play 4K@30fps and some at 60fps but boy dose it have issues with 30fps, I don’t have one 4K game on the Pro that I play in 4k because of the issues, and I leave the “boost mode” off because it kill me to find a game that wont play and have to turn it off and then back on then off again, it sucks, when Xbox can apparently do the same with it’s games, called backward compatible now and Project Scorpio when it releases. Don’t get me wrong the Pro is good and it opened the door for Scorpio though they where working on it before the Pro, just called it a different name than Project Scorpio though they did push the date back before E3 last year, saying the tech was not ready yet. I cant wait till PS5 but then Xbox would do a new console then the question would be if Xbox could keep it’s compatibility again but we all know PS will release a new console first.

    • Eddie Battikha
    • Billy

It Says Rumor, not what Sony Said, (yes almost used all caps) but that is not what Sony said when Xbox was talking about 8 to 10 year consoles. Sony stated that there’s was going to last just as long, so Sony making a console before 2021 that would be would put them before the 8 year make, on the flip side of that if Sony puts out PS5 I am sure Xbox will within 2 years put out a new Xbox. However Xbox has proved they can do backward compatible games so you don’t lose your library, even though they said there is no guarantees that will continue even though they will always work on it.

The same argument works in reverse. When the PS4 was more powerful, Sony fanboys were bragging that they could run games at 900p vs Xbox One’s 720p. But now that they’re on the defensive, suddenly they flip flopped and are now saying it’s not about the graphics, but their exclusives.

This kind of article is about ignorant, it is! There are always technical limitations on hardware that’s why we advance hardware. What should of been said that considering current games and their specs that any of them would run on Scorpio with out limiting the game. I say things all the time without thinking, but this should of been explained much better as soon as the quote was made. There are always limitations on everything always a wall we hit or a celling we bump into, not just with hardware but software even ourselves that is why we strive to improve. This has been going around and no one is trying to correct this misconception, with the exception of gamers who know some about hardware. As my grandfather used to say ” Say what you mean and mean what you say”. As soon as this was said he or someone should of explained the quote and not just left it hanging for authors of articles to misuse.

    • Rasta4

You are correct…he is a mentally disturbed PS4 humping, self upvoting fruitcake in need of serious mental help….otherwise know as Revolver Ocelot.

  • Billy

Technically that is correct, but Sony has never supported an old console with 1st party games past 6 months once the new console has been made. Third part games sometimes go a bit longer. Even if they keep making games who would by a system from anyone that still has not fixed the issues on the old one, because the Pro needs to be fixed. Between “boost mode” fps dropping and its 4K ability being screwed up they lost allot of consumer confidence with it, considering that they promised 4K, when it was in dev stage, even bragged about it and still do. As for PS VR it will run on any both PS4 and the Pro not a stop gap when the VR is one step up from Phone VR, and I had not even gotten into the issues with PS VR. When I got mine I was really disappointed, in fact if Xbox dose the same set up I wont buy it I will wait because it sucks, and they cant get enough support to get it off the ground, 1st party maybe but 3rd is lacking.

  • XbotMK1

What a complete lie and utter nonsense.

12 gigs of RAM doesn’t negate the Scorpibone’s weak CPU and 6 teraflop GPU cap. I think the extra RAM is going to waste for most games.

Brad Wardell seems to be a Microsoft shill who’s been exaggerating and trying to promote Microsoft’s proprietary DX12 API for years even though xbox One already had a low level API from the start.

And this website seems to really love using this guy for clickbait news articles.

    • Billy

They may have it set for 6TF now but they often govern it down, just to raise it if need be. Though if it can run current and future games (say 4 to 5 years) at 4K@60 fps then I see no real issue considering that, what is the highest res we have commercially available right now, now if consumers had access to higher res then I would be worried but as of now, I am not worried about 6TF. I have no idea if Xbox can do everything they are saying but if they can it would be nice, though we don’t know what they mean by VR ready exactly, yet. There is still allot we don’t know about it. Sony tried the whole bait and witch with their 4K program, when in dev they promised 4K outright with upscaling for older games though it has not worked as expected. As for VR, Sony VR is not exactly great or even mid-range and their issue is not enough outside support, so if Xbox goes the same rout, I see it as a flop as well, not that they have to because they have much more experience than Sony as well as more options. Guess till they get something worked out that is good, I will stick with my PC VR, Oculus and their experience in porting games to VR.
