Just make your console stable once and for all, Sony.

Guess what? The PlayStation 4 has received a brand new system update and it is available to download right now. However the update is nothing to get riled up about, as it is just a simple stability update. I wonder when Sony will stop annoying users with the constant stream of these so called stability updates. They have released a few of them already in the past. Honestly, they really need to learn a thing or two from Microsoft in terms of releasing meaningful updates instead of making users download a stability patch now and then.

The change log of the update simply states the following: “System software stability during use of some features has been improved.” Yes, talk about being vague. System update 2.55 is a mandatory update that is required to connect to the PlayStation network. We are hopeful that in the coming months Sony will give some major updates to the PlayStation 4 and slow down these annoying stability patches to once or twice a year.

What are your thoughts on these constant stability updates? Let us know in the comments section below.

Thanks, NeoGaf.

And yet it should have been downloaded an installed without you even knowing it. You know, like PS3 updates since June 2010.

    • Stephen Legerton

The PS4 does do that. So take your misinformed trolling somewhere else.

  • Cypher-Unknown

What a pointless article. I wonder how the author deals with real problems in life.

  • Jeremy Musial

It installs on it’s own while i’m sleeping… Unless you’re playing at 4am on a daily basis, how is it annoying? I’d rather them fix issues than ignore them.

  • Efrt

They’ll stop when they get a stable service. PSN is anything but that. Sony keeps applying band aids hoping one day it fixes itself.

    • XbotMK1

Then why do I allways see you kissing Microsoft’s rear? Xbox Live is less stable than PSN, yet you only praise Microsoft.

Xbox Live has had more store problems with games and it just had another outage 2 days ago.

  • Luis Solia Ser

Why are these updates annoying, in any case, it’s better for us because they can make some games run better or make the whole experience more stable… In Batman Arkham Knight the OS is a bit slower while taking pictures and going to share menu, so maybe this stability firmware will help… MAYBE or maybe they just are making the whole PS4 experience smoother.

    • d0x360

Clearly you misunderstand what the author is saying. He’s saying the constant updates that add no extra features or show any user facing additions are annoyingly especially so because Xbox one owners get a single update basically every month that adds new features to the system. By comparison in the same 2 year span Sony has had 1 update that while welcome was also very underwhelming

    • Luis Solia Ser

I understand, but, you do realize microsoft was trying to fix their console, right? I see it as if they don’t know what they are doing any more with the system, it was pretty broke when i launched, now it’s ok and the updates are great, but also Microsoft is a Software company and they’ve been one since the very begginnings, OS are their strong. Sony has some experience but PlayStation is their only custom made OS, so they should think before act.

    • d0x360

The Xbox one was fine when it launched. Nothing was broken and it still had more features than ps4 and that fact that you posted what you posted just shows you never used a launch Xbox.

    • Microsoft is a software company and they’ve got enough devs to create a good OS like Windows, unlike Sony, I think Sony made a good OS for it’s humble possibilities, Both systems are great.

    • PinkCrocodile75

Sony didn’t make anything, they took FreeBSD, gave it a skin and bastardised the system… thats it.

    • d0x360

The quality of whatever is being offered isn’t the question here. Being a software company doesn’t give Microsoft much of an advantage because Sony is ALSO a software company just not as big. If they wanted to grow they hire people. Problem is Sony is and always has been arrogant. They think their fans will continue to eat up whatever scraps are tossed their way. It has been their biggest weakness for 20 years and the PlayStation division is not immune.

    • Luis Solia Ser

I don’t really understand why you want to make this a discussion about xbox vs ps… It’s stupid, it’ll never reach an agreement on any parts, both systems has their advantages and disadvantages. And I also think that since past generation gamers has been spoiled by consoles that wants to make everything. We are so spoiled by the companies that everyone thinks we deserve everything in equal shares. Get it over, Sony does one thing and Microsoft another. You really can’t take sides on this.

    • d0x360

A discussion of facts is what I’m after. When facts are laid out and only facts and you only use that information then your personal bias should be removed. The discussion doesn’t conclude with system X is better than y. It presents information on a specific aspect of a system and breaks it down into inarguable truths.

Now if someone wants to act like a moron and just make up nonsense to justify their own purchases that’s on them it doesn’t however prevent me from trying to have an actual conversation about something. I don’t care which is “better” because I have both. In this instance I care about feature updates and why one company has been doing them and another has seemingly ignored almost every request by their customer base

    • I agree but It’s hard to explain these things for small minds.

  • d0x360

Speaking of intriguin interfaces the new Xbox one interface should be hitting preview program members sometime soon. I can’t wait to try it out, it looks a whole lot more efficient to use and it fits the new Windows 10 look instead of win8

    • I agree the new Windows 10 interface is way better than Windows 8 I am using the Insider Preview version and it’s stunning, I feel it’s lighter too !

    • PinkCrocodile75

Yes, we have been testing Win 10 Enterprise and its a lot better on current hardware. Win 10 Mobile is excellent too (Huge leap for win phone 8.1 users).

Now add to that the phased in roll out of win 10 based Xbox UI and I think MS will have cracked it.

Windows 8.1 was good but it was no Win 7.

Though Win Server 2012 R2 is good the UI is pants (Mainly use powershell for most admin tasks mind (I’m a RHEL man my self).

However the new win server 2016 looks to be leaps ahead as well

    • XbotMK1

      Xbox fanboy salesman spotted.

The new Xbox One user interface is a rip off of the PS4 user interface. It’s blatantly obvious.

    • d0x360

It’s nothing like the ps4 ui…nothing at all but hey whatever man I really don’t care what you call me. Xbox fanboy sure why not. Microsoft has earned it which is why console wise my Xbox is my daily use machine and my ps4 hasn’t been even turned on in 3 months.

  • Fay_Z

wow ps4 updates really sucks… no new features, just stability updates… oh well at least it has the essentials.. the multitasking is poor for a next gen console.. why must i suspend an app to run another? it has 3.5gb of gddr5 ram reserved for the OS! a pc has no problems doing this & neither does the xbone.

    • Sak Hus

Cuz it was designed by idiots.

  • Sak Hus

soon the rabid pony fans from N4G will jump in here and start blasting you. Sony had probably 4 or 5 updates since ps4 was launched and one is the actual update rest are all some crappy system updates. While every month for pass year and half xbox one has seen constant improvements changes in the UI and overall console performance. Great to be in preview and enjoy the updates even early on.

    • XbotMK1

      Xbox fanboy spotted.

Wow, I remember when Gamingbolt was the the hero of the video game world when they constantly reported that DX12 will do nothing for Xbox One, or the many “xxxx game not coming to Xbox One due to the parity clause”. But lord how the horde changes their tune when you attack their precious Sony god.

  • New feature: Yay, PS4 is the best.
No new feature: This is the worst console ever.

It’s hard to please human being.

  • maxinthefax

i wish in the upcoming update that they release a fix to make you all STFU!

  • Benjamin

What a thing to complain about. I’d quite happily take an update every single day, as long as an improvement is happening somewhere in the system. The authors attitude is terrible.

  • Edward Miller

Windows gets security updates nearly every other day if not every day. PS4 gets updates once every other month that are down loaded and installed most of the time while the console is off and in standby mode, but it’s considered a bad thing.

Only bothers certain people and they probably don’t even own a PS4, or they are extremely biased towards a different console or gaming platform.

    • PinkCrocodile75

Education time. ALL OS’s have regluar security and system patches. Windows, RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Mac OSX, Ubuntu etc, etc.

Xbox gets a monthly System / Feature Update, where as PS4 gets a stability update with no features, once in a blue moon with nothing else to show for it. Thats what the author was on about

  • Dr.Ghettoblaster

Can we get custom folders already & some sort of organization options for the main menu?? The more games I acquire (disc, digital, and demos) the more ridiculous that atrocious unorganized mess of a main menu is getting

    • Soda Popinski

      I’ll second that…BIGTIME. Plus I’d add:

      – Digital PS1 classics cross buy/play support (currently cross buy/play on PSP, Vita, AND PS3)
      – Friend notifications (like PS3)
      – Hard Drive file storage option (like PS3)
      – Increased cloud save storage space

Very happy to see USB video and DLNA support finally added.

  • GotNews4Ya

Just because it doesn’t tell you that it did something special.. doesn’t mean that it didn’t do anything special.. A lot of times Sony will fix a major issue that people are complaining about.. or modify something for the better.. and really not say much about it at all.. People just tend to post articles about it a few days later with the title like “OH Sony did Such and such in the latest patch”

not annoying, just leave ps4 on sleep mode and it will download and install automatically. This is one of the reasons why they made the sleep function for.
