PS4 Pro, PlayStation VR “Continue to Sell Well” – Sony

Sony describes this as the “harvest phase” for PS4.

15 Things You Need To Know About PlayStation VR

Sony hosted a conference call for investors and analysts to discuss its quarterly financial results and revealed that the PS4 Pro and PlayStation VR are performing quite well.

Chief Financial Officer Kenichiro Yoshida said that, “PS VR and PS4 Pro, which went on sale last fall, both continue to sell well, which demonstrates the achievements we made when launching new products in fiscal 16.”

While shipments forecast for the PS4 in fiscal year 2017 (which ends March 31st 2018) was lower than fiscal year 2016, Sony believes the console is undergoing a “harvest phase”. “Three and a half years have passed since the launch of PS4, and we expect annual unit sales in fiscal 17 to decrease year-on-year to 18 million units, but some major software titles are scheduled to be launched, and we believe we are in the harvest phase of the platform.”

Sony is currently working on software promotion and network infrastructure as the PS4 nears the peak of its console cycle. “This is the fourth year since launch for PS4, and the peak for the past platforms came three or four years after the launch, and PS4 should not be an exception in our view, but if sold units reach 18 million this year, the cumulative number would be 78 million, so we need to capitalize and leverage on this base for software sales. We need to promote the software business and network business so that we can expand the profits.

“For hardware, according to the normal cycle, the peak will be this or the next year. For profit and software, the peak will come according to the conventional cycle, and we don’t feel that there will be a major diversion from this trend. For software, this is the season for harvest, and we would like to promote a steady business going forward.

With the growth of network services, this is different from past business practices, and console cycles in the past. We cannot eliminate volatility, but after the peak, volatility of performance should be minimized to stabilize the profit foundation.”

So no real psvr and ps4 pro numbers?

    • Dougdec92

Everyone keeps it to themselves, good old Phil started it first

    • greatnessIsaLIE

Actually the Sony ceo that retired last Gen he used to hold out on sale numbers as well.

    • Yes.. because Sony doesn’t need to brag so much about anything. They could have announced sale numbers but probably didn’t because they were focused on making the PS4 better and investing in 1st IP studios.

Now microsoft on the other hand has to keep it’s mouth shut because the position they are in is just awfull.. no 1st party games and a weak console (xbox one).

Any mention of sales numbers would just constantly remind people of the disaster the xbox brand has become, most people would be comparing something like 70 million PS4 units sold to something like 25 million Xbox one’s sold.

Ouch!.. yeah i would keep my mouth shut and my head down too if i was microsoft. 🙁

    • greatnessIsaLIE

Microsoft really only talks about npd sales if anything. In the npd the Xbox isn’t that far behind. It’s been 1.17 to 1 in North America. But your right stating sale numbers would take a negative reaction. They basically aren’t trying to feed you trolls. The sales may be bad but the brand is the best it’s ever been and on top of that they are about to release the most powerful console.
It’s a great time to be an Xbox gamer. 70 to 25 haha that’s funny. I like how you added 15 million to ps4 and took away 5 million from xb1. You trolls are funny sometimes.

    • Its just a couple of millions error margin 🙂

    • greatnessIsaLIE

I don’t understand. Was my math incorrect or is the ps4 not outselling the Xbox one 1.17 to 1 I n north America ?

    • Ps4 is outselling everything!!!

Nintendo, xbox.. 4k tv’s.. burger king.. you name it the PS4 is selling more.. XD

Honestly i was just guessing when i said 70 million and 25 million.. i think Sony is forecasted to sell 70 million PS4 units. And last time i checked xbox one sales were lagging by a ratio of 2:1 but i think now it’s like 3:1.

So 70 million divided by 3 is around 20/25 million xbox one consoles sold. But i rounded it up to 30 million.

    • greatnessIsaLIE

The console sales war is over Sony won. All Xbox can do now is make the Xbox brand as good as possible so they can have a chance next gen.
I don’t think they’ll ever try to match the ps hardware anymore. This gen they were both supposed to be about the same in performance, but Sony beefed up the ps4 last minute. They were that desperate they couldn’t compete on a level playing field.
I don’t see Microsoft ever falling for that again. They will always be one step ahead of Sony with more powerful hardware. They just have to make it out of this gen alive.lol
This gen is lost because it lost the American market. If you can dominate the American market then you can win a console war.

    • It all depends on the timing of each console release.. interesting times nonetheless.

If the PS5 drops in 2018 then things will get worse for Xbox cause Sony will just carry the momentum they have now over to the PS5, thus ensuring an unbroken flow of domination.

    • Wait untill the disastrous day one launch of the Scorpio arrives lol.. then we’ll talk sales numbers.

    • greatnessIsaLIE

Sales won’t matter at that point. It’s still going to be the best console on the market. No matter how much ps4 sales it won’t be better than the scorpio.
I’m sure it won’t be as bad as the ps4 pro launch. That was probably the worst launch in history. More than 6 months later and still hasn’t reached a million consoles. I do hope the scorpio sells better than that at least.

    • Dougdec92

Well the ps2 just did exactly that and it was the best console not for power but for its purpose.

    • Yeah.. it will be the “greatest” .. the most “fantastic” console bla bla bla.. stop the marketing hype already.

By your own argument nobody will care about the Scorpio either, since nobody cared about the PS4 Pro.

They are both targeting the hardest of the hardcore fans.. the problem is, in the case of the Scorpio.. it will be a complete disaster, because even the xbox one will take a hit saleswise.

Face it, the Scorpio is the dumbest idea ever. They should have just released a true next gen console.. not this half upgrade called Scorpio. Same argument you xboxers use against the PS4 Pro..

But allright, if the PS4 Pro didn’t sell as well as you think. . Why in the world do you think the Scorpio would sell even better?! And just wait untill the next price cut for the PS4 Pro hahah.. i guess the price of the PS4 Pro will drop about a $100 the day the Scorpio is in retail stores. Then we will see who will pick up which console.

The Scorpio will not have the games or the experience you get from the PS4 Pro.. ever. The style and gameplay of Sony/PS games is unique.

Also you forget.. it is only a matter of time before a stronger console arrives that beats the Scorpio, something like a PS5 ring any bells?

So yeah.. your beloved Scorpio will be the most powerfull console for a very.. very short time. Untill the PS5 is released.

And nobody is going to rebuy the games they own on the PS4 Pro again on the Scorpio.. therefore the majority of people won’t be buying a Scorpio!

Also.. right now, almost nobody is playing backwards compatible xbox 360 games on their Xb1, so basically nobody cares about old last-gen games on a new 4k system that will supposedly make them look and play better.

      The Scorpio’s slogan should be:

‘Xbox Scorpio.. the same problem, just a different day!’

    • greatnessIsaLIE

Either way you look at it…..the Scorpio is going to wreck the ps4 for the next 3 years. It will be the best place to play games for the rest of the Gen and next Gen the new Xbox will crush the pussystation5 now stop crying and play HZD again.

    • In an ideal xbox scorpio world things would be the way you say.. unfortunately last time i checked Sony was king. I checked 2 seconds ago.. and you, are trying to predict future events that have not even happened yet. Stop fantasizing and daydreaming.

Everything depends on day 1 sales of the xbox Scorpio.. you better pray alot.

    • greatnessIsaLIE

Sales have nothing to do with the fact that Scorpio wrecks the ps4. It’s just normal for a more powerful machine to be more……powerful.
I’m not predicting that it will be better. I think we all now that and digital foundry themselves said that the Scorpio was superior to the ps4 pro in everyway.

    • Yeah but im not buying a console just because it is superior.. don’t you get that?

Superior in what? Graphics? Well ok.. it might be better with graphics but it can’t play my PS4 Pro games. That’s all i’m saying..

The Scorpio is not radical enough for me to buy it. It will take a Scorpio 2 or a PS5 for me to buy a console again.

    • greatnessIsaLIE

Fair enough. I’m the opposite I buy all the newest hardware and graphics card. I’m thinking of ordering an 8k monitor for my pc.

    • PC is the way to go, i’m trying to build a Ci7/GTX1080 PC.. but waiting for prices to drop a little.

If you can build an 8k system go for it! XD that’s really sick.. you’d be master race hahah

    • greatnessIsaLIE

I can do 8k just don’t have an 8k display. Pc is cool I just don’t like playing multi player on it. I’m a good player on most games but I hate try hards and cheaters.
That’s why I game on consoles most of the time. I don’t mind the low frame rates and low resolution.

  • One With Shadows

That’s because it’s good. Notice the Xbone sucks and notice then how it doesn’t sell very well. It’s basic economics really. Supply and demand. That sort of thing.

Exactly that’s why the ps4 pro sells worst than the wii u.

    • One With Shadows

“Sells worst than the Wii u”?!! Lol. Man your grammar sucks hey? Are you in the 3rd grade or are you really just stupid?

    • greatnessIsaLIE

What I didn’t know we were in school. Dude get a clue this is about video games.

  • Good news, i hope they are focusing on a backwards compatible ‘PS5’ so i dont have to rebuy my games when it drops.

I also hope they unlock some more cpu cores in the PS4 Pro to compete with the Scorpio..

    • Dougdec92

      Yhp, I agree
