Steam does it again. The online gaming platform, which also acts as a digital distribution service, has set a new all-time high record for most number of users logged in concurrently. On January 3rd, more than 12.3 million were using Steam concurrently, up from 10.7 million users in October 2015.

Many of the top games (according to Steam Stats) are what you’d expect – Dota 2 is at 591,433 users currently while Counter Strike: Global Offensive is at 221,649 users. Despite Fallout 4 being out for two months and discussed to death, it’s still the third most played game today with 46,959 users currently online.

Steam has been a continuing success story for Valve Software and it should be interesting to see how the service pans out when HTC Vive – the virtual reality headset created in collaboration with Valve – is introduced along with Steam VR. What are your thoughts on the newest all-time high record for concurrent users? Let us know in the comments.

How do it kick consoles butts?

    • Psionicinversion

more concurrent users.. i.e. people online at exactly the same time

    • Gamez Rule

But that just means PCs connected to steam.. When my PC is on it’s connected auto- to Steam but I’m not online using Steam gaming

    • Psionicinversion

same as PS plus. Cant remember what the last ps plus subscriber number was but it was something around 10-12 mill, migt be more like 13 mill now but there concurrent user hit like 5 mill. thats 12 mill subs spread around the different worlds time zones so just by turning on will log you into ps plus. Its doubtful all that 5 mill is online gaming

    • Gamez Rule

PS-Plus is not logged in as you turn the console on. Neither is PSN? You can log in once you started the consoles if you choose to.

Don’t think there’s been an offical concurrent PlayStation User base figure.

    • Psionicinversion

yes it is actually, it auto logs you in as it needs to so it can check if your eligible to play the ps+ games. Its also logged in because it silently saves your game progress to the servers. There was a a concurrent user base figure once buried under an article about ps+ sub figures. If its 12 mill then generally it can only ever achieve a max of half really because like i said time zones like america to europe, there a sleep when america is awake and america is a sleep when europe is awake type of deal

My Son has console is upstairs and hasn’t got internet but he can still play PS+ games that I’ve placed onto the console. So no when you turn the console on it doesn’t sign in to PS+. Game saves also save to HDD so no need for cloud either.

IF my son wanted to play MY PS+ games online ( he can do so without uisng PS+ himself ) as I already have it.

    • Psionicinversion

thats a bit weird. Yes the game saves are saved to the hard drive but it will also look to save them to the cloud servers. If youve got uplay or origin when ever you exit the game it auto loads the game saves to the server so if your PC breaks it doesnt matter. No saves are lost

    • Gamez Rule

Yeah you can choose to use cloud or HDD.

    • Psionicinversion

well it uses both, its just a copy basically so if it corrupts on your drive you can replace it with the one from the cloud

    • Gamez Rule

It can use both but not when no interent is connected, it saves to HDD

    • Psionicinversion

yeah i know but the point is it makes a copy to the servers so like if your PS4 is broke and get it replaced itll grab your save from the servers so your ps4 is logged in if it has internet it also auto downloads game patches you receive any notifications, messages etc so even if your not online gaming its still logged in just like steam. so just by turning it on you are logged into psn

    • Gamez Rule

It’s not logged into PSN once turned on as my son has no internet. Which means no game server copies or anything, and even when you do have interent on PS4 it isn’t logged into anything ( unless you set it that way ) which is not like Steam as Steam is setup to log in automacally ( Unless you stop Steam from doing it )

    • Psionicinversion

you hurt my head, you just cant admit anything can you. If you havnt got the internet your not logged in if you have got the internet your ARE logged in and you might have to set it up to not auto login. I havnt changed any of the settings on my ps4 since i had it and when you turn it on it shows you friends online, message, etc ect so yes you are auto logged in

    • Gamez Rule

Fact is if you have a PS4 online you do NOT have to be logged into PSN or PS+ to play games ( even when starting the console up for the very first time ) as it is NOT auto logged into any account whatsoever ( unless you make it so )..Same for PS3

You are not auto logged in when turning your PS4 on ( unless you have auto login set ) to that account.

    • Psionicinversion

hmm comign to think of it think i did have to check stay online, it was 1 1/2 years ago when i had it. But the point is if your paying for PS+ to go online why would you keep your console offline? the whole point is so a friend can message you or start a party chat or invite you to an online game or something. Whats the point in that if you keep your console offline?? you may do that but i can guarantee the majority of other people keep it online. Besides it no different then just unchecking Steams start at launch option

    • Gamez Rule

“But the point is if your paying for PS+ to go online why would you keep your console offline?”..”Whats the point in that if you keep your console offline??”…… I will answer.

I have the main PS consoles downstairs all online. I’ve joined PS+ from day one since it released. I have placed my account onto the PS consoles that are ( offline upstairs ) so my younger aged family can play the PS+ games I downloaded onto the consoles. My family that are older aged use the consoles downstairs online as I have no worrries about them doing this.

(( unchecking Steams start at launch option )) This shouldn’t need to be uncheaked to begin with IMO as some people don’t even know that’s it’s doing that, it should have been made to ( accept online login like PS Consoles ) and not just login in as standard.

    • Psionicinversion

well alot of stuff on PC does that, auto set to startup on windows launch but steam being on doesnt affect anything at all and all it uses is a bit of ram really but unless you got 4GB and try to game on the latest titles its not a problem

    • Gamez Rule

I know this but Steams “Concurrent User Record” just means PCs are connected to steam.. Whish is why I stated *When my PC is on it’s connected auto- to Steam but I’m not online using Steam gaming* meaning that Steam figures doesn’t mean that amount of people were gaming.

    • Psionicinversion

hows that any different to PS+ concurrent record? that was people connected to PS+ not people gaming like i said most people will have it auto login, you login your connected and your counted.

    • Gamez Rule

Sony doesn’t do concurrent records like Steam, they do the amount of accounts for PSN made etc. While steam uses PC gamers logged in to the service simultaneously ( concurrent records )

Completly different and far from the same thing.

    • Psionicinversion

So are you trying tell me they don’t know how many people are logged into there service at any one time?! That’s the simplest bit of info they can log. Of course they do. If they can tell me what I bought a game on, ps4, mobile app, web browser on a computer, what IP address it’s using and the exact time bought it… They damn sure know how many people are logged in at once

    • Gamez Rule

The point clearly being made to you is that Sony doesn’t do concurrent records like Steam as I explained fully above.

IF you want to show me PSN/PS+ concurrent records like Steam then please do so.

    • Psionicinversion

Sony doesn’t announce it like steam but they sure do keep records because they need to know throughout the year when the peak load is and whether its getting higher or lower so yes they know exactly how many people are logged in and they most certainly log it. To not acknowledge that is a bit stupid
