The Elder Scrolls 6: Balancing The Need For A Good Art Style Versus Technically Impressive Graphics

With Fallout 4 now out, and extended post launch support for it slated to end by this year’s end, all eyes are on Bethesda’s next major project, which is widely expected to be The Elder Scrolls 6. As the successor to The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, it is going to be the follow up to one of the highest selling games of all time- so naturally, interest in this sequel, and whatever it is expected to do, is high, higher than previous Bethesda games.

One of the points of discussion here is just how The Elder Scrolls 6 will look- back when Oblivion released for the Xbox 360 in 2006, it was widely held to be the first example of a truly ‘next gen’ game, and overall, it was graphically beyond anything on the market. Skyrim, when it launched in 2011, was similarly a visually impressive game, one that has held up better (and outright becomes the greatest looking game ever made with the right mods).

But Bethesda’s penchant for pushing graphical tech seems to have been lost between Skyrim and now, because when Fallout 4 launched last year, it was an ugly game- yes, it had a stark and visually striking artstyle, but the actual graphical technology was laughably poor, and in a year when The Witcher 3 had managed to set a new benchmark visually for open world RPGs, Fallout 4 appeared laughably dated.

The question now is, with The Elder Scrolls 6, do we expect Bethesda to craft a visually stunning game again? Or are we just going to see something barely acceptable, but with a strong artstyle that redeems it somewhat, much like Fallout 4? While the pessimist in me is tempted to say that The Elder Scrolls 6 will be every bit as technically unimpressive as Fallout 4 was, I do think that this might not be the case- Fallout 4 was a special case, where the game was originally developed for the Xbox 360 and PS3 spec, before PS4 and Xbox One versions were added to the mix, and then finally, the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions were dropped before the game was even announced- surely it looking as terrible as it does has something to do with this schizophrenic development trajectory. Then, too, Fallout 3 and New Vegas were never particularly good looking- so it appears that while Bethesda can never nail the look of Fallout, their Elder Scrolls games never suffer on that front.

All of which is to say, The Elder Scrolls 6 may end up being a visually good looking game, as has been the case for the series for a while now, after all. Which, I seriously hope is the case- Fallout 4′s graphics themselves may be irrelevant by themselves, but they are indicative of a Bethesda getting complacent and lazy- and we don’t want that with their next game.

    I still remember how amazing Morrowind’s graphics were at the time… And then came Oblivion and blew it away! Skyrim’s colors were a bit washed out and there were texture mistakes and lazy work in the 3D models, but it still looked good overall. But Fallout 3 and New Vegas looked mediocre, and 4 looks dated by now.

      Its even worse when you look at the quests. My god is the game monotonous. While Skyrim was not exactly a example of variety in dungeons, the above world was in general very mixed in enemy types. But Fallout 4 has always the same quests and enemies. Very few quests go beyond fetch, kill, return … And the escort quests are even worse ( with escorts getting bugged or stuck walking or distracted every 5 minutes ).

      Its even unrealistic if you take in account how many mutants are in the game. Given the history about how the mutants got made, its like they breath like rabbits. Let alone the raiders. And the constant re-spawning on cleared spots is beyond ridicule. In Skyrim you clear a spot and it might trigger a quest done. In Fallout 4 those are regular enemy spots until you do a quest ( it will respawn for the quest ) and open a door left or right. And respawn and respawn..

      Sure, Skyrim also had dungeon respawn but they took way longer then the rate in Fallout 4. And you end up less going back to the same dungeons / area’s, so any respawn’s are less noticed. They also change enemy types on quests! A bandit fortress can later be claimed by imperial / rebels. Fallout 4 its always the same enemies that respawn.

      Fallout 4 feels so lazy… quest wise, story wise. Its mostly the building mod that makes people rack up massive amount of hours in-game until they find out that it really has very little use those communities.

      Frankly, Fallout 4 feels unfinished / rushed / without inspiration. And while Skyrim also has major flaws, they seem less noticeable / less repetitive.
