‘Why Would Anybody Play This?’ Says Sony Exec On Backwards Compatibility

Sony executive doesn’t believe in backward compatibility, it seems.

Backwards compatibility is a great feature. It ensures continuity of libraries and purchases (which is ever more important in the digital age), and it also ensures that customers feel engaged and invested in your ecosystem. It’s a customer friendly move and idea, and it also has some commercial merits to it- as the sales spikes for Red Dead Redemption and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, when they became playable on Xbox One via backward compatibility, demonstrate.

However, it looks like Sony’s Jim Ryan doesn’t believe that at all. Speaking to Time, Ryan said, “When we’ve dabbled with backwards compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much. That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games, and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?”

This is a highly arrogant statement, that not only throws older games and legacy titles and developers under the bus, but presumes to speak for all customers. Plus, Sony hasn’t exactly had trouble with backward compatibility when they’ve been able to monetize it via PS Now and PS2 Classics on PS4.

This is just poor form all around.

Why would they when they can sell you the same game again?

Lol and that’s a FACT pony boys

    Still Sony doesn’t get it.

What’s the point of making a new system if full power won’t be exposed? Scorpio = Higher Mid Gen Update then PS4 Pro PS5 = Next Gen Console.

    • Smart guy

U are very wrong if thinking only sony will come out with something new in the coming years. Both company’s are working on the next gen. When a ps5 gets an official announcement you can be sure Microsoft will do the same lol so not putting an Xbox 4/Scorpio 2 in the next gen category is a little one sided…

Isn’t BC with PS3 games impossible because of the PS3’s cell architecture?

    • HaCkEr_Fc

No. Personal 5 works fine on PC via PlayStation 3 emulator

Sony exes doesn’t believe in Backwards Compatibility, but it’s alright to sell PSN classics from PlayStation 3 on PlayStation 4 again

    good logic

That is why I will buy the Xbox Scorpio, just like I bought a Xbox360 4 years ago, I will not buy a PS4 or PS4Pro…

Why would I want to play ICO, SotC or MediEvil on my Ps4? Am I crazy? Just make a remaster, ffs.
    /sarcasm

  • Mr Xrat

Sounds about right. Switch has no BC at all, not even Virtual Console, and it’s a runaway success. PS3 had PS2 BC removed to cut costs and sales roared. 360 quietly dumped Xbox emulation and no one cared.

Xbone has some emulation slapped in two years later, console is still moribund. Evidence is all there.

‘Why Would Anybody Play This?’ Says Sony Exec On Backwards Compatibility”
“Sony executive doesn’t believe in backward compatibility”

Now we have another evidence that future PS5 can’t run any game from PS4. Like PS4 can’t run games from PS3. Sony doesn’t believe in backward compatibility.

Want BC? -> Buy Xbox Scorpio – console with full backward compatibility

    • Mr Xrat

Incorrect. PS4’s architecture was specifically chosen for ease of development and future compatibility in mind.

You don’t have “full BC.” You have patchy emulation. Deal with it.

  • Brian Klippel

He’s just another spoiled, rediculously wealthy, overpaid CEO that is out of touch with reality. Sony doesn’t deserve it’s customers.

  • SalvagedXBot

He used a poor example ( a racer like GT) to make his point. There are games that hold up much better with age and it would be a shame to forget about those that still offer great gameplay.

  • Holeybartender

    He is absolutely right.

I’m too busy playing PS4 games to play my old games but when I’m not I just play my old system because I’m a real gamer and still have mine. However with my 4k tv the games do look outdated with all those jagged edges.Backwards compatibility is useless.

    • Dougdec92

My thoughts exactly, the only way one can stomach those ancient graphics is an acute bout of nostalgia, MS did it and they still need a Scorpio to save them, I’m too busy finishing up ps4 exclusive games let alone the 3rd parties, if you want BC assured just keep your older system.

  • XterminatorbotMK1

You’re taking what he stated out of context which isn’t a surprise from this garbage website.

At no point did he say, “why would anyone play backwards compatibility?”. After all Sony offers PS2 classics and PS Now on PS4.

He was stating his personal opinion on some of these older games that look very dated and his opinion is reasonable.

    • Gamez Rule

Well I didn’t buy a PS4 to play my PS3 games. I just placed the PS3 in a room with my older consoles and allow them to be used with the games I already owned☺

I don’t want BC if it could hold back going forward that’s for sure.

  • Riggybro

BC obviously isn’t as hard as is made out. Countless emulators are on PC.
If a couple of dudes in a bedroom can figure it out then imagine what a major company can do. Unfortunately there is no money in it so Sony and MS don’t bother.

Xboxone only has 360 BC out of desperation (to try to improve XB sales). If XB had launched as planned it wouldn’t have 360 BC.

The term “Backwards compatibility” doesn’t even exist on PC.. it just is. Things just work across all of those different combinations of hardware.

  • Peter

Wow this thread is a pool of poison. Ironically the backwards compatibility feature on Xbox One has made some old Xbox 360 titles actually run better than the original hardware ever did. I remember running Oblivion on my old Xbox 360 and that ‘Loading area…’ screen. You now don’t get that while running it on the Xbox One, as it’s similar to playing it on a modern day PC.

  • Ocelot forgot his meds

This moron should be asking why PS4 owners would pay to rent streaming time to play old games on PSnow.

Funny how Sony supports paid back compat on PSnow but not free back compat like on Xbox.

This generation of gamers and especially media are so moronic that they may indeed bring the end of consoles
