Xbox Head: We Are Doubling Down On Gaming, Not Abandoning It

‘Announcing two consoles would be a strange lead in to that.’

Earlier this week, DFC released a report stating that Microsoft’s E3 show this year was evidence that the company was on track to leave the console hardware business eventually, and that all of its announcements at E3 this year were indicative of this move. Even at the time, I found the report to be a bit odd, especially given that Microsoft had just announced two new consoles (including one directly in response to the criticism leveled at the Xbox One), as well as multiple new games in the pipeline.

Now, Xbox head Phil Spencer has responded to these claims, yet again, on Twitter, noting that Microsoft is doubling down on gaming, not abandoning it, and that the announcement of two new consoles should be ample evidence of that.

Personally, I am inclined to agree with him- and at this point, if the announcement of two new consoles doesn’t convince someone that Microsoft intends to stay in the console business for the foreseeable future, then nothing will. Those people are just determined to hate the Xbox no matter what- and there is no reasoning that can get through to them.

LOL, doubling down on failure is more like it. Phil just said the other day that “if you don’t have a 4k television, then don’t buy an Xbox Scorpio, as the Scorpio will only benefit those with a 4k televison”. On the other hand, the Xbox Slim is just their way of trying to correct their original huge mistake, the Xbox One. More mixed messaging, and vague, uninformative tweets again from Phil, ‘the tweet whisperer’.

    • Mark

Well even if u wanna say “doubling down on failure”, it’s still an investment, in which anybody who’s got 50% of their left brain working, would never suggest this means they’re about to sell the Division. That’s more than retarted to conclude. Atleast a retarded person has an excuse ahaha. And these analysts are paid 6 digits….

I get u hate Microsoft, but this asinine analysis didn’t come from u, it came from an established “professional”…wow!

Dearest Michael, without talking down to you too much…the word you are trying to use in your attempt at an intelligent reply is “retarded”.
LOL, now please go and press the ‘hard reset’ button for that left side of your brain, though I really think you might have to reformat the whole thing, as your brain seems to working like an Xbox One this morning. Lets just start with the hard reset, and if that doesn’t work, you’ll probably need to contact a MS tech support rep in Pakistan for further help.

Acquiring more 1st party studios to produce exclusive games, instead of shutting them down, and keeping those studio’s games exclusive to the console, would be a more convincing investment.

    • Jugo94

Because xbox is more than just one box now. They’re making games for their ecosystem. Also MS isn’t the only company with timed exclusives. They don’t need to have a bunch of first party studios to get games made. From a consumer stand point it shouldn’t matter. What matters is that games are being made.

    • Doggystyle

Oh yeah, the “ecosystem” thing again. How could we ever forget the “ecosystem”.

LOL. Thanks again for reminding me about that whole “Windows 10 ecosystem” line of bullsh** that MS is pitching as an excuse for their console gaming failures. If you keep repeating that “ecosystem” buzzword, you might even start to believe in it yourself. Its just another way of saying “we’re losing sooo bad to Sony, that we’re going to completely change our focus to putting our remaining exclusive games on PC to make up for our losses”. “Ecosystem”. What a great smokescreen.

    • Jugo94

I mean you can cast doubt or whatever it is you have, but it is a real thing. They’re trying to link their devices together instead of being separate. They’re not really competing with Sony in the same way anymore.

    • Doggystyle

You’re damn right they’re not. They stopped competing the day they announced the OG Xbox One. Its been all damage control since that day. And all this ecosystem nonsense is the exact result of that damage control. They’re getting out and they’re not gonna tell you they’re getting out. Good luck.

    • Jugo94

You wish for what you want to man. I don’t know why people like you are so negative though. Especially with something so cool.

    • Doggystyle

Thanks. Same to you. Bye now.

    • Jugo94

      Peace.

    • Don

They have their Sony goggles on and can’t see what MS is doing. That’s why you can’t have an intelligent conversation with them, they’re reality is skewed.

    • João Pedro

      You’re disgusting.

    • Doggystyle

Thanks. It’s a lot of hard work.

    • João Pedro

People like you don’t need to try hard, its just natural.

    • Doggystyle

Wow, you’re being really nice for no reason. People like you make the world a wonderful place! Thanks!

    • João Pedro

I don’t feel the need to be nice with scumbags such as you.

    • Cenk Algu

Wowww this Sony fanboyism running your veins right? All your comments Bullshit.

    • ThePiePieper

True, but Phil has done nothing but right the ship and get Xbox into a great place. More games and more ways to play it. If this E3 hasn’t shown you that Microsoft has made Xbox brand a much different thing than 3 years ago, there is no hope of making you happy.

    • Mark

Whoa. Listen I’m not about to get into this “exclusives” debate of how much they invest in 1p studios, I see how freakin long we’d be arguing, not interested haha. My comment was simply saying that no one, no one, without a bias of course lol, would have logically come to a conclusion that Microsoft’s gonna sell Xbox, after announcing 2 new models……how could one extrapolate that, based on the announcements? *Sigh. “Strange” indeed Phil, “Strange” indeed haha wow. If u disagree then hey I respect ur opinion. U can have the last word.

    • Doggystyle

“I get u hate Microsoft, but this asinine analysis didn’t come from u, it came from an established “professional”…wow!”

LOL, and I get that you love Microsoft, but Mark, your analysis is coming from…

    • Starman

You sound like the stupidest f@got Pc Sony fanboy out here ….
The only company who is pulling out is Sony , they told you dummies b4 , but you don’t read/ listen …. They’re becoming a streaming company .Your dumb@$$ wouldn’t know that because your head is too far up their @$$3$ to hear. So please STFU

    • Michael

Only console failure would be vita. With ps VR soon to follow. Sad pony ,you wish sony could announce 2 consoles. Of course sony would have to stop bouncing checks to get something meaningful.

    • ThePiePieper

Whenever Sony gets around to announcing their thing, I’m sure the message too will be 4K for a 4K device.

  • Crapgamer

Only a complete moron would think otherwise. People have to remember that analysts are no different than anyone else. Some (like Pachter) make bold predictions but are rarely correct. I still remember him saying he would eat his hat if The Walking Dead won GOTY at the Awards show.
Having 15 exclusives being worked on, 2 new consoles, and posting gains in Xbox Live revenue is obviously an indicator that they’re all in.

    • momo

hey crap, love/hate your vids. But I gotta say, you’re kinda sounding like the biggest hypocrite in the world recently by supporting the scorpio and its power. You’re sounding just like the PS4 fanboys who bashed the xbox one for being weaker.

    • UlfricDormPorn

Hey momo, Crapgamer, Mooch, Tim Dog, and Xbox guys like myself, truly believe it’s about the games, and deep down inside have always felt that the discrepancy in power between the Xbox One and the PS4 has always been massively overblown, while Xbox Live’s superiority, Xbox One Peripheral superiority, and other Xbox Value-Added propositions (BC) have been severely downplayed. However, because Sony fans and the complicit games media have personally lifted the PS4 above all else under the banner of power, there’s nothing wrong with pointing out the blatant hypocrisy exhibited by the non self-aware Sony media complex. There’s a bit of nuance you’re missing here, and I’m not surprised it’s from someone whose allegiance probably lies with team Sony.

    • BelAirBoss

The only thing “lifting” the ps4 and Sony is the strength of their highly rated exclusives. The end. If you have trouble understanding that, you have trouble with reality, and that is a you problem.

    • UlfricDormPorn

You mean linear, safe, corridor experiences boosted by Sony’s Hollywood production pedigree when it comes to voice acting and mo-cap? You remove the high production values, and most Sony exclusives are nothing but self-aggrandizing, bland “hold the players’ hand” experiences with no replay value.

At least Xbox’s exclusives foster community with their robust and polished MP experiences, Sony’s exclusives are built to give Sony fans a false sense of importance due to their pretentious attempts to blend cinema and games.

    • The_Shepard

“You mean linear, safe, corridor experiences boosted by Sony’s Hollywood
production pedigree when it comes to voice acting and mo-cap?’

Are you saying Sony shouldn’t let their first party studios play to their strengths? Should Naughty Dog develop a sports game while Sony San Diego develops an RTS? Maybe SuckerPunch can do an MMO too. -__-

What I will never understand is how fanboys will try to undermine highly rated games by the general consensus with their own opinions and pass them off as facts. It’s a classic tactic from those who just can’t appreciate great games even if it doesn’t fit THEIR tastes.

    • BelAirBoss

Let me reiterate, for those with a difficult time understanding simple English….The only thing “lifting” the ps4 and Sony is the strength of their highly rated exclusives. The end. If you have trouble understanding that, you have trouble with reality, and that is a you problem.

Looks like the problem is indeed yours, and you’re struggling with it. Good luck with that.

    • dead fanboy

Sony is part of Hollywood. It’s part of corporate control media. While Microsoft is a mainly engineer company and Nintendo it’s a toy and as well a engineering.

    • KashIsKlay

      Facts

    • Mr Xrat

“Xbox guys like myself, truly believe it’s about the games,”

Yep. That’s why the PS4’s been stamping on the Xbone for the last three years, and will continue to do so. Tough luck.

    • Batosaims

Yeah that’s why outside of JRPG’s and 3rd person action games the PS4 practically fails miserably in every other genre, no wonder Sony fanboys keep running back to COD and Destiny after they beat their “Exclusives” in 7 hours.

    • dead fanboy

Microsoft leaving the gaming industry will be a major catastrophe for the community. I have seen this generation and the PS2 era Sony exploited the consumer with it’s shady business practices. As well Nintendo tend to be evil striking down YouTube and third party developers. We already lost Sega. So we can’t afford losing Microsoft.

    • Mr Xrat

Scared of history repeating, huh? Xgimps are eating s**t just how Sega fanboys did.

    • Mr Xrat

“Only a complete moron would think otherwise.”

Looking at your Youtube channel, that’s an amusing thing for you to be saying, you rancid, obese slug. It’s especially more amusing considering your meltdown when QB went to PC.

  • Riggybro

I don’t think MS are getting out of gaming I think they are transitioning to get out of hardware.
Why? Because that is the future of gaming in general.

    Then why announce Scorpio?
If MS want to get out of hardware and create the future “Windows10 family” they must transition gradually. If they just abruptly announce they are out of the hardware business today they will lose all those potential future Windows family customers that are currently on Xbox.
With Scorpio they want to win back all those console customers they lost this gen meanwhile as the world slowly moves towards a subscription/streaming based system. In the near future you won’t need a big elaborate box under your tv or desk and the closer Windows OS on Xbox moves towards Windows OS on PC the less reason there is for MS to manufacture a “MS tv box”.

So by eventually leaving behind “consoles” (in the way we perceive them today) I think MS are just future focused and are currently just positioning themselves into a stronger place.

This is obviously a different situation for Sony and Nintendo who are not Windows based.

    • mystogan

I think that’s bogus tho. Scorpio might be more like a PC but not anymore than the Xbox One is. Unless it actually runs PC games(Which would be awesome). It still is a console. Microsoft is not leaving the console game any time soon.

    • dead fanboy

Nintendo is moving to expand its brand as well by announcing the upcoming NX which will be integrated to the mobile business. Bringing Nintendo franchises to their handhelds but also on IPhones and other devices. I wouldn’t be surprise if Sony goes in that same direction.

  • dead fanboy

Majority of PCs out there can’t even outperformed the WiiU. By having a less expensive choice or basic one will always be there “consoles”. We seen games performing superior in Xbox One than Windows 10 PC…good examples are Quantum Break, Tomb Raider, Titanfall, and Gears of War ultimate edition. Some say that Amazon and Apple can replace Microsoft but these two companies aren’t interested in making consoles or even entering the gaming industry. Microsoft leaving gaming will be a catastrophe for the industry. Sony and Nintendo are very shady corporations…I don’t trust them at all.

  • Mr Xrat

Doubling down with no new IP and a confused Scorpio announcement that doesn’t inspire confidence. Hilarious.

  • angh

It looks bit funny when we compare ps4 and xbox/uwp games this year:
