Xbox One X’s Potential For Long Term Success May Already Have Been Demonstrated By Microsoft’s Own Elite Controller

The power of an “engaged” community.

I know what you are thinking at that headline- what? I’m sure you did a double take, and asked yourself if I’m actually out of things to write about, when you saw it. And at first glance, it probably seems like the most ridiculous, logically incoherent statement ever- the potential for long term success of an upcoming console was already demonstrated by a controller? How?

But I am sure that even as you repeated the statement to yourself in incredulity, or probably as you read the preceding paragraph, it might have begun to occur to you- the Xbox One Elite Controller may actually be the greatest barometer we have for the long term success of the Xbox One X.

The Xbox One Elite Controller, when it was first revealed, was pitched as a truly impressive, high end piece of kit for the true gaming enthusiast. It looked fantastic, and it looked like Microsoft had managed to make yet another great controller- until the price was announced to be a ridiculous $150.

"The Xbox One Elite Controller sold beyond expectations, and continues to to this day, in spite of its price."

$150 for a game controller: who would spend that kind of money? For a bit above $150, you could get yourself three new games, more used ones, three regular controllers, three years of online play, a brand new Nintendo 3DS, a brand new PS Vita, or even a used Wii U- and this is just sticking to games. Why in the world would anyone spend that kind of money on a controller? The Xbox One Elite Controller looked great, yes- but $150 great?

Apparently, it was $150 great, because it went on to be a great success, exceeding even Microsoft’s expectations. Microsoft, perhaps sensibly, had not produced many units of the thing, presumably expecting it to not sell all that much owing to its price- but it ended up selling out, with there being so much demand for it that it was backordered for months. The Xbox One Elite Controller sold beyond expectations, and continues to to this day, in spite of its price.

This brings us to the greatest advantage Xbox has- not its strong showing on the services front, not the hardware, not the marketing, and certainly not the exclusives. No, Xbox’s biggest advantage is its highly engaged fanbase.

User engagement matters- ultimately, a customer can end up purchasing expensive hardware, but there is no further revenue (or any revenue if that hardware was sold at a loss, like so much hardware often is) if the user does not keep spending money on it. That money comes from games, accessories, and services like online play. Engaged userbases usually lead to typically high subscription numbers, and huge attach ratios, while disengaged userbases often lead to disappointing attach rates and software sales even when the hardware has sold a lot.

Xbox One Logo

"An engaged userbase means that userbase will buy games; subscribe to services; invest in the platform, no matter how expensive things might get. That’s how Microsoft sold a $150 controller- and that is how they might sell a $500 console as well."

Userbase engagement is something Microsoft has thrived at for years- they started with the original Xbox, with Halo 2 and the original Xbox Live paving the way, and creating a community, something that carried over to the Xbox 360, where Microsoft built an even bigger community of gamers. And even on the Xbox One, amidst all of their total lack of direction and coherence when it comes to their lineup of exclusives, they have managed to keep their community consistently engaged. People like to make fun of Major Nelson and Phil Spencer, and their constant interactions with their community, but it is just one way of keeping their userbase engaged- and that user engagement goes a long way, as the consistently high subscription numbers for Xbox services, and high sales for games and accessories, demonstrate.

An engaged userbase means that userbase will buy games; subscribe to services; invest in the platform, no matter how expensive things might get. That’s how Microsoft sold a $150 controller- and that is how they might sell a $500 console as well. Because even if their install base is small– and it is smaller than the PlayStation install base- it is an engaged install base.

This is an advantageous track to take for Microsoft as well- even as their hardware sales go down, they have managed to find a way to remain profitable and generate revenues, simply by monetizing their existing userbase more. Microsoft wins, because it manages to do well even when by traditional metrics, it is not. Xbox fans win, because they are getting more from the platform they love. And if they want to spend $150 on a controller, or $500 on a console, who are we to tell them otherwise? I have already discussed how, as great as the Xbox One X is, I don’t think it is worth $500- but value is an inherently personal and subjective thing. It may not be worth it to you, me, or anyone on the outside- but if an Xbox fan decides that the Xbox One X is worth $500 to them, who are we to tell them otherwise?

So here we are- the Xbox One X is already known to be doing well in terms of pre-orders, but questions about its long term viability exist and remain. I don’t know how much the Xbox One X might do going forward- but I do know that there is precedence for even a pricey, niche piece of high end Xbox hardware to end up doing unexpectedly well.

The Xbox One X may end up doing that, too.

In other words, a lot of Xbox fans like me are older (see Microsoft internal survey) and have DISPOSABLE INCOME, ie NOT BROKE LITTLE FANBOY KIDS, and are not interested in building a PC (see http://www.dualshockers.com/xbox-one-x-vs-pc/) so we can’t wait for our X1X

    • zcar_driver

I have an Elite Controller, thrustmaster wheel. I will be buying a X1X. I agree I don’t want to be involved with a PC build. Yes disposable income for toys is nice. My avatar is my latest toy. Its more fun then a PS4/XB1 also.

    • theduckofdeath

I am older and have the cash. One night of drinking can be $250-300+. PC is my main platform now. I’ve always played on consoles, too, amd have an XB1 and an elite controller. I want the most pratical scenario for each room — right now it would be XB1X and an LG OLED in the living room, and a PC running 2560×1440 at 60-144 fps in another room. I’m building a new PC as we speak, though my existing machine is still beyond adequate.

    • kreator

Where you drink at, the local bar?

    • theduckofdeath

Go to multiple bars & lounges, uber/cabs, maybe food…it all adds up quick. That is pretty easy expenditure on date.

Yup 1080Ti blitzes 1440p 144/165hz, great combo tbh.. and once you hit 100+fps it feels ultra buttery smooth, even dipping into the 50’s-60’s feels and looks a bit sluggish when you get used to the higher fps.

Though 60fps is quite smooth, it’s ok for consoles since you get used to it and it’s locked. That’s why i own a Switch and high end PC, best of both worlds.. plus PC free online play, and Switch will have a very cheap subscription service unlike PSN/XBL.

So when I replaced Ps4 with pro, got wheel, PSVR, Scuf elite PS4 controller, she doesn’t really blink. Plus after what I see what she spends on her organic makeup, well damn.

    • PachterStation

We’ll soon see how many Xbox diehards are out there simply by looking at Xbox One X sales. Although Xbox One/Xbox One S sales are average. The original Xbox was dire sales wise, but that soon changed with the Xbox 360. But it seems that Microsoft shot itself in the foot before the Xbox One was launched. I just can’t see how Microsoft can sell the Xbox One X to the masses at £500 with a game. It’s one of the dumbest ideas in the history of gaming, especially when it’s trying to dig itself out of a hole. And next gen will be here sooner than we think….

    • wobblypops46

PS3 sold for $100 more and with no big exclusives at launch as well.

$500 for a premium console with a 4k Blu-ray is a good deal no matter what bull$hit you fanboys say.

    • Ucouldntbemorewrong

REAL big difference in that, PS3 while expensive at launch had not many games at the launch of a new generation. XBX1 is coming into a generation 4 years running, it should be dropping into alot more exclusives and it’s just not. Ya XB1X is a great system but don’t expect it to sell more than PS4/Pro or XB1s.
1 out of every 7 XB will be an X probably.

So why is the attach rate about the same, if so many more- percentage wise or pure numbers, take your pick- Xbox gamers have disposable income?

And why do so many of you sound like children when making what you think passes for an argument?

I hear ya. Spent $90,000 on a 100″ Z9D alone without anything else in my setup.

For me its like a “first console of 9th generation”. Its 5x stronger than 8th generation which was 5x stronger than 7th generation. Of course old generation doesn’t exist anymore because all future consoles will be full backward and forward compatible (like PC). All console games will work on every “generation” with different level of details.

…or maybe – MAYBE – people love to buy great pieces of hardware (see iPhones and Samsung’s Galaxy S series smartphones). Considering that probably the majority of those who bought and are still buying the Elite controller are pc gamers – notoriously adverse to everything Microsoft – your entire construct* falls flat.

*which was nothing more than an attempt to downplay the Xbox and – reading between the lines – to say that its fanbase is quite stupid and that the only market the X has is of the same customers and has no chance to capture other people’s attention.

    • Mark

I agree with u about “Xbox fans being quite stupid”, it does seem like Pramath feels we’d buy whatever they put out, maybe I’m wrong. Also, there’s a big disconnect between the Elite controller and the 1X…..one has zero marketing, but the other will have it in abundance for years to come, especially in head to heads at DigitalFoundry. He’s right about Xbox engagement, but that doesn’t translate to everything Microsoft’s put out there…

    • chaz

Sorry, I’m not trying to say Xbox fans are stupid at all. I don’t feel engaged fan bases are stupid, I have never bought that argument for Apple, Nintendo, and now Xbox. On the contrary, I feel like having an engaged fanbase is one of the biggest advantages a company can have- indeed, I’d argue it’s one of the biggest reasons Nintendo managed to survive for as long as it did.

    • Mark

Yeah but that’s kinda downplaying the 1X’s success in terms of NEW gamers comin to Xbox, if the 1X does sell millions. Also, we don’t buy as much as u think; not even half of us bought Kinect, and our exclusives sell like crap! Outside of Halo. They didn’t even buy Gears 4! So yes we’re engaged but that doesn’t really translate to Microsoft’s own offerings…

    • Mark

If it does really well, that’s gonna be due to a mix of Xbox guys, PS4 and PC guys buyin it imo. Although the Elite controller does well, most us don’t have a Kinect, so I just see a disconnect there

    • Sp4ctr0

I also think that “Head to Head” at Digital Foundry will be most important articles for all new consoles in future. Original PS4 won in 2013 only because of those articles. Digital Foundry compare every single game and PS4 always wins with original Xbox One. Now Xbox X will be fastest and many owners of PS4 will replace old consoles

    • J. Locanas

I don’t think many owners of PS4 will switch over – have you seen how toxic that community is? I do think that the XB360 fanbase who migrated to PS4 at the start of the gen will start to come back however, with the X.

    • Sp4ctr0

Some gamers always want have best hardware. In 2013 those gamers bought PS4 only because it was 40% faster than original Xbox One Now those games want XOX because this console is 3.5x faster than PS4. This is great difference. Basic PS4 from 2013 looks like last generation

Anyway, it’s too early to predict if the X will be a success or not. It is likely that the majority of the preorders comes from the “engaged fanbase”, but I think – maybe wrongly – that MS is trying to meet the needs of those adults who used to play on pc and that are not so eager anymore to spend their time tinkering with specs, compatibility, etc. Considering also that MS is going to support M+K, and it’s going to publish on Xbox many games born on pc (PUBG, Black Desert, who knows… maybe Age Of Empires?) and that according to Steam surveys the majority of gaming pc of its user base has medium to low specs… who knows, maybe that’s the target MS is aiming for?

    • Sp4ctr0

“it’s too early to predict if the X will be a success or not”

In next two years Xbox X will replace Xbox S when cheaper “slim” version will be ready.

      2013 – 28 nm Xbox One
      2016 – 16 nm Xbox One S
      2017 – 16 nm Xbox One X
      2019 or 2020 – 7 nm Xbox One X “slim” for 250-300 usd
      2020 or 2021 – 7 nm Xbox One Y
      2024 – … Xbox Y “slim”
      2025 – … Xbox Z

All revisions fully compatible forward and backward. Without games exclusive to single generation. All games will work on every revision of hardware with different level of details (like on PC).

    • J. Locanas

Oh god, it won’t be 7nm in 2019 or 2020. Intel just started a pilot factory at 7nm and AMD is always several years behind Intel so, no, no 7nm anytime soon. 10nm is the next step, and will be in Intel’s next chips for next year supposedly.

That doesn’t prove that the X will be as successful as some might expect.
I don’t think that the X will be comparable to the S in terms of sale numbers, in fact it’s a known fact that Spencer said that it’s a premium console for those who want a premium product. Thus I suppose that “success” to the Xbox Head is something way different than what the likes of Pachter or some naysayer think.

    • Mark

I think it’s for everybody if they’d just drop the price soon! Lmao. Nah but who knows, ultimately it’s good cuz devs are moving toward 4k and high res assets for console, so come next gen the these guys will alot of experience on this matter.

    • heima

I think that hardwares like the X’s aren’t cheap. Also, they are playing with us just like Apple does. They say it’s a premium product to make you want it, they are creating your need to buy the X.

    • Mark

They can “create” that desire all they want, but if they can pull off 4K gaming, PC quality textures, 4K Bluray…yadda yadda yah, then I WANT IT! Lol

I don’t care which one he prefers. Going through 3 PS3s, though? Highly unlikely.

Claimed he wanted single-player games out of Xbox or he might choose a PS4 for his console of choice… but is so excited to get the XOX that those single-player games he’s not getting don’t matter. I replaced the laser in one myself for about $40; the others I bought when I gave away my first one to my nephews, the second one I had to sell, the third one was stolen. I’m on my fourth in about ten years. And the first one was used, to boot.

      Exactly

  • PachterStation

As time goes on, we’ll see how many Xbox diehards are out there with Xbox One X sales. 4K TV sales are not exactly hitting mass numbers, which doesn’t bode well for 4K consoles and 4K movies. But for £500 with a game and not even an elite controller. Last time I looked, an elite controller sold for around £130, so you could say an Xbox One X will set you back nearly £650. It then makes you wonder how much the PS5 and Xbox Two will cost, which are not far off. If Sony and Microsoft are going to release new models every 2 to 3 years, at any price, they’re not worth investing into. This gen has turned out to be a farce, not forgetting Sony’s PS4 VR (price and range of games). But a lot of gamers out there are clinically obsessed with graphics and tech. The extra cost of playing online, paying for DLC, milked franchises (and there’s plenty) and 2 to 4 different versions of the same game, gaming is heading for meltdown.

    • Eddie Battikha

Fall 2019 for PS5 and Fall 2020 for Xbox Two it is as Sony and Microsoft are switching to 3 year hardware refresh cycles. PlayStation will always have a 1 year power advantage and then Xbox will jump in for a 2 years power advantage. Sony will always be ahead because of their Sales, Fanbase and First Party Exclusives. https://www.google.com/amp/wccftech.com/next-xbox-console-designed-codename/amp/#xxri=18

    • PachterStation

Somehow, I think Sony will be first out with the PS5, then Microsoft will release the Xbox Two with better specs. Not a chance will next gen be a re-run of PS4 versus Xbox One.

  • midas777

wow that is actually a really thought out article with very accurate information – with the Xbox One X (still not digging the name though) you are literally getting a really high end PC and this fits the older gamer with the disposable income to afford the better technology but you are not spending the K’s you would on a gaming PC – you hit the nail on the head; it will be very interesting to see how this plays out – one thing is for sure MS needs to ramp up on the Exclusives would like to see some new blood there, like the upgrades and like the 3rd party taking advantage of it – for people that are saying 4k isn’t here they are inaccurate – the cost of tv’s is affordable and 500 for a nice “rig” is in the wheelhouse most of the people purchasing this are higher end gamers – agree with waitill314’s comment dead on. Look forward to November

It’s also compatible with a PC, and we have no idea how well it actually sold or is selling.

I’m not seeing any evidence to suggest that the XB users are more engaged than the users of any other platform. Higher end stuff sells decently whatever the platform. Who do you think buys the $250 collection’s edition of games? If you have any official numbers of software attach rates, accessories attach rates, or ratio of subscribers, then by all means share them. Otherwise, this article can apply to pretty much any platform.

    • efnet

“The average person will buy a new console once that new console plays new games, not just an enhanced version of the same games.”

Do you have any numbers to support that?

    • TheMoil

No one really releases any information to let us in on this stat, however Aaero developer recently said that xbox was their best selling platform. Considering the install base of PS4 to Xbox that’s certainly an indicator that xbox has high engagement.

  • Xbox One X unlocked

Xbox fans have always been the best fans.

To the point of allowing the PS4 to win the generation to help with recovery sales by agreeing on letting them have some titles at higher resolutions.
Which was agreed was need to Keep Apple out of our console market so its just Microsoft and Sony to share.

Now Sony is recoving well – time to play weak is over.
And we have agreed on Native 4k now and increasing our sales.

    BOOM

    • efnet

Can you please stop speaking as an xbox fan, you make the rest of us cringe with some of the crazy things you say.

    • Xbox One X unlocked

We only speak on behalf of the true xbox fans, not the causal gamers.

    • efnet

See what i mean? Who is we by the way?

    • Xbox One X unlocked

We are the true fans. Ones that didn’t jump ship to PS4 in 2013.
But knew it was part of the bigger plan.

    • efnet

      Bro, stop….
You’re making yourself seems extremely off mentally, there’s nothing wrong with being a fan, but
This ” we knew it was part of a bigger plan” crap has to stop

    • Xbox One X unlocked

Apple didn’t enter, so it worked

    • efnet

What does that have to do with anything?

    • Xbox One X unlocked

All about been the best fans

    • efnet

      Jesus christ man

    • Xbox One X unlocked

Don’t you support xbox as a brand?

    • efnet

I support the xbox as the console i prefer to play on, im not into the extra stuff

    • zcar_driver

Why would anyone just support a brand? That’s crazy. All things being equal. I do try to buy American when I can.

    • kma99

Oh god. It this guy. Back talking in third person

    • Xbox One X unlocked

Yes, we agreed on the year ban and now we are back to support the xbox.

    • kma99

No you didn’t agree you had to accept it because you can’t fight it. Please do us a favor and cut the crap we have enough sonytards in here and you will simply give them bulletin board material acting all weird.

    • Xbox One X unlocked

We are the better fans anyway.

Xbox users buy more games and we helped Sony recover during 2013-2016

    • kma99

Dude stop. Xrat is bad enough.

    • kma99

Just stop already. Xrat is annoying enough

    • Tomaterrrx

      Just stop dude.

  • BMurdoch

I was a buyer of launch day editions of the original Xbox (the built in Ethernet, optical audio out was ahead of its’ time), got hooked on Halo… bought dozens of games, became an original XBox Live beta tester (got a TShirt and orange flash memory stick in order to get insulted by Australian kids playing RC racer games while MS worked the bugs out). Got the XBox 360 on launch day, made it three years before red rings of death hit me, but I bought MS’s extended warranty and got it fixed for zero cost). Bought several more dozen games. Bought launch day Xbox One (I actually liked the VCR styling in my equipment rack)…. It has been left on every day since I got it, as my satellite TV is fed through the pass through hdmi. I just upgraded to a 4K projector, and can’t wait for 11/7 so I can feed some 4K content into it. I never owned a PlayStation of any generation, although I did own all the Nintendo generations up until the GameCube when I gave up on them. I played PC games for years, but a 23″ monitor can’t compete with the 92″ movie screen in my media room with Dolby Atmos speakers all around. My gamertag avatar still wears the X helmet they gave 10 year gold subscribers a few years back. And I like my Elite controller too.. I did pull off those weird crab like under controller buttons though…. Not sure why the Sony fanboys feel the need to crap on us… plenty of room for both (you won’t like a world with only one console to choose from… it stifles innovation and encourages price gouging by the monopolist)….. From a 51 year old geezer gamer…. Now get off my lawn.

    • dave69uk .

Lol. Best comment I’ve read for ages.
I’m looking forward to my ‘X’ helmet in the next 12 months or so 🙂
Nice to see another ‘mature’ gamer – check out my Youtube page (NightmareUK69) if you bored enough to see another old geezer playing stuff (with his old gamer mates).

  • Chris Rogers

Well, I’m an ‘old git’ Xbox gamer & won’t purchase the X1X this Christmas cycle, but may get one for Xmas 2018 once price has dropped a little – next major purchase will be an Xbox Elite controller & Xbox One S for my young daughter – no interest in PC gaming & never used a Playstation, so MS have my business for next 3-5 years.

  • Mr Xrat

So a SCUF copy of questionable build quality that disappeared once the million manufactured announcement came in (more than their games did at least, well done!) demonstrates “long term success?” Four years of Xbox failure has made people lose their minds.
