To say that the original Max Payne was a light-hearted game would be an utter lie, but its sequel goes even darker with its themes and its plot. If the first game was a glimpse into Max’s suffering, the sequel is a deep dive into the twisted mind of this cynical cold-blooded killer. It’s all punctuated by sharp writing composed of memorable one-liners and anecdotes, and the plot itself continues to throw new revelations at the player repeatedly, engulfing Max further and further into a hole of never-ending despair.
