Killing Floor
Considering how well-regarded Killing Floor 2 is, it’s interesting to see critical reactions to its predecessor. Released for PC in 2009, it actually began life as a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004. It has a whopping 34,623 reviews over the years with 96 percent being positive but even in the initial years, Killing Floor received a steady stream of positive user reviews. On Metacritic, the user score is 8.6 with 1441 ratings, the majority being positive.
On the critical front, the Metascore averages to 72 based on 30 critic reviews with 15 positive, 14 mixed and one being negative. Killing Floor was criticized for its low-budget presentation, lack of story, repetitive gameplay and small number of maps with Left 4 Dead being considered superior. The more positive reviews noted the game’s great weapon design, sound effects and promising gameplay though it was noted to be different from your average zombie shooter experience.
Over the years, Killing Floor would receive numerous updates and additional content, selling about three million copies as of December 2014. Killing Floor 2 was released in November 2016 and also received praise from fans, though less than the original due to a variety of factors (see: micro-transactions being added before its full release). Its Metascore is only slightly better at 75 but it’s still receiving support to this day.
