Tengami
Initially released in 2014 for iOS and Nintendo Wii U before coming to PC and Android in 2015, Nyamyam’s Tengami is an adventure title whose aesthetic channels Japanese paintings. It’s a short, fairly straightforward title with great music, and as you might have guessed, didn’t quite resonate with all of its critics. The Metacritic score is 70 with 15 critic reviews, seven being positive, seven mixed and one negative. Plenty of praise was heaped on its visuals and music but the gameplay left much to be desired. While there aren’t a lot of user reviews to go off on Metacritic, the overall user score is still crazy with 918 positive ratings, five mixed and 21 negative.
Tengami was rated lower on PC among critics with a score of 57 for six reviews. And though the user score – based on only 10 ratings – is lower there, the Steam page tells a different story. Among its 691 reviews, 83 percent are positive, giving it a “Very Positive” rating overall. Many praised the game’s pop-up book presentation even as the puzzle-solving and gameplay took a back-seat. An odd reception all around but at least the music still holds up to this day.
