4. Achievements
The “gamification” seen in modern console interfaces was pioneered by the Xbox 360's achievements system and, though this kind of thing has had its fair share of detractors, it has proven a popular enough idea to transfer over to the likes of Steam and the PS3. Getting your first achievement was just one of those iconic gaming moments you'll take to the grave with you, and the achievement collecting process and its associated sound effects have been parodied in plenty of memes since.
