STEINS;GATE
More people probably know of Steins;Gate from the excellent anime adaptation than the original visual novel, but that anime, as great as it is, doesn’t really capture the full extent of the intricacies of the original game, and just how truly devilish its mysteries could be. Taking the form of a science fiction thriller, interspersed with liberal dosings of some good old fashioned conspiracy theories, Steins;Gate follows the trials and tribulations faced by the members of a self-styled, barely funded science lab when they accidentally stumble upon the secret to time travel – and all the implications that can have, from dominating the world, to the more fundamental violations of causality it can pose. The mysteries just layer upon themselves, pulling in not just cosmic-scale conflicts, but also the characters and their own pasts too, with the final, ultimate revelations being a mind boggling set of resolutions that it can take quite a lot to fully process. Steins;Gate without a doubt has one of the greatest science fiction stories, and if you haven’t checked it out yet, you should chase it down.
