Horizon Zero Dawn’s post-post-apocalyptic setting sees the survivors of a very old global calamity surviving in a densely overgrown world, having regressed to tribal cultures, and contending with mechanical creatures. A setting like that instantly paves the way for a lot of questions, and Horizon keeps asking these and then satisfactorily answering them constantly. Learning about what happened that led to the apocalypse, about the origins of the machines, about the new culture of survivors that blends elements of fantasy and science fiction, and about what the heck Sylens’ deal is- all of these things and more constantly generate a ton of mystery, keeping players hooked, and culminates with some memorable revelations.
