METAL GEAR SOLID 5: THE PHANTOM PAIN
“Mystery” isn’t something that one usually associates with Metal Gear, in spite of how weird and wacky the franchise tends to get. This is a series that’s notorious for over-explaining things, which is why the minimalistic approach it took in The Phantom Pain was so surprising. From its beginning, Metal Gear Solid 5 has players questioning everything, not just with the story arcs and characters it keeps introducing, but also because of the potential implications all of that could have on the series’ larger story. It is, of course, disappointing that Metal Gear Solid 5 de-emphasizes storytelling a little bit too much, which means players have to work a lot harder to get answers to some questions than they should have. Even so, for Metal Gear fans, The Phantom Pain is an absolute goldmine in retrospect, and generates questions and discussions to this day.
