7. Fallout 3: VATS System

Wanna blow out the mutants head? Oh wait! I want to take his damn limbs or wait, May be his arms. With the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System or V.A.T.S. in Fallout 3 you can decide accurately what you want to blow off.  When VATS is initiated the real time action will pause, and the screen will focus towards the enemy indicatiing the various parts of the body. The VATS system is easily the best game play mechanic of Fallout 3.

6. Prince of Persia: Running on the Walls

We all played the classic Prince of Persia on our DOS compatible machines when we were kids. Technology has improved a ton since then and we are seeing those things which would have never been possible two decades ago, one of them being running on the walls. Ubisoft released one of the best games of the last generation; Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. The game was one of the first games in which the protagonist can run along the walls. This has remained unchanged in all the four Prince of Persia games that followed afterwards. Even after seven years, this game play mechanic never feels old.

5. Gears of War: The Cover system

Tell me one game that has a better cover system than Gears of War. I am not saying that a cover system did not existed before this, but no game has done it better then the Gears of War. The best feature about this system is that you can take cover even when you are at marginal distance away from the cover. In fact I will say this; the entire Gears of War franchise is dependent on this mechanic and is also responsible for making the series that it is today.

4.   Halo 2: Regenerative Health

Halo 2 was the first game to implement the Regenerative Health system in first person shooter games, an idea that is now being used in almost all games of all type of genre. Instead of requiring the player to find health packs, the system will allow the player to automatically heal if they are able to find proper cover. Nowadays some games use both, Regenerative Health as well as Health packs. Resistance Fall of Man is one such example.
