Command & Conquer: Generals 2
EA has received a fair bit of ire over the years due to its treatment of classic IPs, the Command and Conquer franchise being a prime example. Command and Conquer: Generals was one of the more well-received titles in the franchise, and following the debacle that was Command and Conquer 4, the sequel’s announcement in December 2011 drew some hype. In August 2012, however, EA had announced its change to a free to play model along with referring to it as just Command and Conquer. Then-president Frank Gibeau took to assuaging fan concerns after the backlash while also touting the benefits of the free to play model. Following the announcement of campaign missions releasing in 2014, Command and Conquer would be canceled in October 2013. Multiplayer was blamed, Victory Games closed down, and an anonymous member of the studio would blame EA for, quote, “corporate shenanigans.”
