ENCUMBERANCE

Encumbrance is a mechanic that makes complete sense on paper- but it shouldn’t exist. It’s just no fun- quite the opposite, in fact. It’s actively annoying, to the extent where it can hurt your enjoyment of a game, even if it’s for the briefest of moments. Developers never want to make games that are completely authentic, because games are, after all, about escaping to a different reality and having fun, and not dealing with the mundane annoyances that complete authenticity would go hand-in-hand with- and it’s surprising that many developers don’t realize that the same principal applies to encumbrance mechanics. Having to slowly crawl through Skyrim’s open world to get to some place because all of the stuff in your inventory is too valuable to let go of- that’s not fun.
