WEIRD FAST TRAVEL MECHANICS

Quite often, traversal mechanics in games are so enjoyable that you don’t even use fast travel mechanics too often (at all)- games like Marvel’s Spider-Man, Miles Morales, or Forza Horizon are perfect examples of that. But that’s not always the case. Sometimes, like in Grand Theft Auto 5 or Red Dead Redemption 2, that kind of traversal isn’t the point. And yet it’s exactly those games that have the most winded, asinine fast travel mechanics of all time. GTA 5, for instance, has you jumping through hoops just so you can take a taxi to a specific part of the map. It’s the opposite of quick and convenient, which is exactly what fast travel needs to be.
