ABRUPT OR UNFINISHED ENDING
You’re in the heat of the action, sprinting toward an epic showdown at breakneck speed, and the stakes have never been higher. Things are coming to a head, the pieces of the story are about to fall into place, mysteries are going to be revealed, aaaand…. the end. It’s not even a cliffhanger. It’s just abrupt. It’s like someone cut the game off while it still had so much left to say.
Metal Gear Solid 5 comes to mind once again (it was, in fact, very literally cut off while it was still being developed. RIP Chapter 3). There’s also Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, a game that just stopped after that final boss, when it felt like it was moving towards a proper conclusion. And sure, this ending might make more sense if and when we ever get a sequel- but then again, who knows when that might happen, eh? Yet another cliffhanger with no conclusion. For now, at least.
