To be continued... maybe, if we ever make a sequel, which we probably won't.

TWIST REVEAL THAT MAKES NO SENSE

Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain

Here’s something that’s even worse than predictable twists- twists that make no sense. With predictable twists, at least they made sense. They made too much sense, that’s why they were predictable. They fit too neatly in the rules of the story. These “unpredictable” shocking twists, though, seem to exist for no purpose other than surprising the player- and when a plotpoint uses a twist for nothing other than shock value, that’s not exactly the best writing.

The game that comes to mind immediately with this is Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. We find out the Venom Snake was never Big Boss- he was always a clone, who, due to plastic surgery and hypnotherapy, was fooled into believing he was Big Boss. And sure, it makes sense the way any Metal Gear twist makes sense- within the bizarre, crazy rules this universe has created. But really? It makes no damn sense at all.
