YOUR CHOICES MATTER… EXCEPT THEY DON’T

All too often, video games make the bold claim that all of your choices will drastically change the way your story ends. And sure, sometimes they make good on that promise. The likes of The Witcher 3, Heavy Rain, Until Dawn, Detroit: Become Human, Divinity: Original Sin, and many others have actually had proper, meaningful choice and consequence mechanics.

But there are also just as many examples – if not more – of games making that same promise, and yet not living up to it in the slightest. Mass Effect 3 is perhaps the most popular example, where the ending was basically dependant on one of three choices. Which ending do you want? Red, Blue, or Green? Then there were all the Telltale Games, which threw so many choices at players, but hardly any of them ever had any impact on the ending.
