As the personal assistant to Aperture Science CEO Cave Johnson, Caroline was touted as the “backbone” of the facility, eventually succeeding Johnson after his death. However, such was her brilliance that she had her “essence” extracted and added to the core of GLaDOS, thus overseeing the facility forever after. Even worse if that in some unused voice files, it’s revealed that Caroline didn’t want her mind to be implanted into the core, which means she was forced against her will to do so.
