COVER-BASED SHOOTERS
It wasn’t all about first person shooters though, of course. In 2006, Epic Games and Microsoft together released a little game known as Gears of War, and the ripple effect it had on the industry is still being felt today. The latter half of the 2000s decade saw a deluge of cover-based third person shooter releases, from Gears of War itself to Uncharted to Mass Effect and countless others. The design philosophy became so commonly used that even Harry Potter movie tie-ins, of all games, would go on to use cover-based shooting mechanics.
