OPEN WORLD GAMES
It seems like every major release these days has to be an open world game, and the one game responsible for that came all the way back in October of 2001- Grand Theft Auto 3. GTA 3 did not create the open world genre (if you want to call it a genre), and there were certainly several other games that came out before it or around its launch that did similar things- but it was GTA 3 that popularized open world design. And really, popularized is putting it mildly. It set the blueprint that open world games are following to this day.
