The Metal Gear REX vs Metal Gear RAY battle in Guns of the Patriots has to be among the best scenes this franchise has ever given us. It was a moment of pure fan service, of two massive nuclear tanks squaring off against each other in a battle of brothers, a culmination of dramatic and outlandish storytelling in an equally dramatic and outlandish scene. But once you get past the fanatic hysteria (and we understand that that’s easier said than done), you start to realize the scene shouldn’t have existed in the first place. In fact, neither should have the entire plotline about Snake going back to Shadow Moses nine years later. The Shadow Moses Incident was a well documented and publicized one, one that was even covered by the media- so why was it that the nuclear capable walking mega-tank was left unattended on the island for all those years? Did no one- not the government, not the countless secret agencies, not even the Patriots- seem to think that recovering it might pay off in the future somehow?
