Shadow of the Colossus
Scaling colossi to the soundtrack of epic orchestral music is, if considered on its own, a cinematic experience worthy of a place on this rundown. However, if we break Shadow of the Colossus down to its barest elements its ostensibly a silent movie punctuated by occasional environmental puzzles. There’s cinematic quality in batting the colossi, but those moments of isolation between battles as Wander and Agro gallop across vast plains and empty forests – sometimes for minutes on end without musical accompaniment – evoke contemplation on the game’s central themes: love, grief, and their intertwined relationship.
