There’s a secret covenant called the Mound-Makers that can be discovered in a unique way. Don’t kill the Cursed Rotted Greatwood in the Undead Settlement. When traversing the bridge and over the roof top, roll down below. A cage carrier will be visible and he won’t be hostile. You can actually jump into the cage and be transported to the pits to meet the Mound-Makers covenant. If you poke around a bit in the world, you’ll come across a cage that’s full and learn more about why the carrier keeps his cage open.
