Creating a compelling open world can be challenging. Here are 15 games that show a huge amount of potential but falter in one way or another.

Mad Max

Avalanche Studios’ Mad Max is another title that evoked mixed reactions. Many liked its world design which echoed the post-apocalyptic landscape of the films but some found it to be barren. Strongholds could be fun to liberate but were overall lacking in meaningful depth. You could venture out into the Big Nothing to garner rare parts for your vehicle, the Magnum Opus, battling sandstorms in the process or engage in car combat. But the overall survival elements felt lackluster and inconsistent while many of the missions were too samey and repetitive. It overall depended on how much you loved the Mad Max atmosphere and whether that’s enough to forgive some of the more grievous issues.
