Raiden Crushed (Metal Gear Solid 4)

Raiden is capable of some serious superhuman feats as a cyborg. While his being crushed in Metal Gear Solid 4 by a massive ship is a call-back to Grey Fox helping Snake in Metal Gear Solid 1, why is either feat possible in the first place? How do you get super-crushed by a ship and then somehow stay alive long enough to prevent it from moving forward? Why not make all our ships out of this magical metal then?
