Looking for a Key, but you Can’t Kick the Door Down

You’re in the middle of a post-apocalyptic hell-hole, struggling to survive. You come across a house with supplies, but those supplies are locked behind a door. There are countless shattered windows, and the door is made of decaying wood. For whatever reason, you’re told you need to find a key for the door instead of just kicking the door down, or even hopping through a window. Why? Even in modern day games you’re almost never given the option to simply kick the door down, or even use explosives to blow a hole in the wall or something, it has to be the key on the other side of the level.
