The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
For as much flak as Bethesda gets for games like Fallout 4, the developer pushed some truly genre-defining mechanics. The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind is arguably its most ambitious project, focusing more on hand-crafted environments in a huge open world with tons of quests and NPCs to interact with. It took a good six years of development (some of the technology simply didn’t exist to make it happen) but The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind released in 2002 and ultimately ended up saving the company.
