WOLFENSTEIN: YOUNGBLOOD
MachineGames’ revival of the Wolfenstein franchise has been glorious to witness. This year, before they followed up on The New Colossus with a proper numbered sequel, they gave us a bit of a stopgap to chew on- and with it, they decided to experiment with some stuff. Most of these experiments didn’t work out. The shoehorned progression and loot mechanics completely neutered the combat, while Youngblood’s decision to be structured in a more open-ended manner rather than being a completely guided experience like its predecessors also proved to be a bad one. Worst of all was the game’s lack of focus on narrative and storytelling, which is something that had been a major element in both, The New Order and The New Colossus. Hopefully, Wolfenstein 3, whenever it arrives, will be more like the numbered games than this disappointing spinoff.
