Many of the games on this list are an uncomfortable mixture of fun and frustrating. Hotline Miami is an example of a game that is just so retro, so lovable and just so damn cool…and then it shatters your heart by being so damn difficult. On the one hand, it’s meant to be a realistic bad-ass simulator, making you feel all the more powerful as you murder multiple enemies.

It encourages brutal melee based gameplay, arming you with bats and katanas while allowing you to knock enemies down and bash their heads against the floor. On the other hand, the game is still monstrously difficult. You need to be extremely quick and precise when executing your attack plans, and even the slightest mistake will allow one single enemy to kill you. It only gets harder the further you progress. Hotline Miami is awesome, make no mistake. If only it was just easier to love.
