All that success, the fact that the PS1 was so much more developer-friendly than its competitors, and the development support Sony so willingly provided to third parties obviously meant that the console became a favourite of developers in the industry. For instance, by 1996 end, after just two years in the market (one year in the west), there were 400 PS1 games in development, as opposed to 200 on the Sega Saturn and 60 on the N64.
