What Game Freak do seem to be pushing this time around instead of Mega Evolutions are Z Moves. Z Moves are essentially the equivalent of signature moves, or finishers, with each of the Pokemon types getting at least one, and some Pokemon species getting one all of their own. Z Moves are devastating, and can change the tide of battle entirely- they can only be used once per battle as a result. How they influence the Pokemon metagame will be fascinating to see.
