Evolution is the real world is actually gradual geographical variation exhibited across the same species, until the cumulative total of all the variations results in two separate species altogether. Pokemon will finally be adapting this as an in game mechanic, thanks to Alolan forms- classic, older Pokemon return in Sun/Moon with new typings, new moves, new abilities, and looking completely different. This means that formerly unviable Pokemon, such as Raichu or Vulpix, suddenly can become viable in the metagame, too. Not to mention that something like this adds to the richness and believability of Pokemon lore.
