LOOT BOXES AND MICROTRANSACTIONS

loot boxes

Probably the worst trend in the industry in recent years. In-game monetization started out slowly during the final years of the previous generation with games such as Mass Effect 3 and FIFA 14, but as time went on, microtransactions became an industry standard, to the extent that even single player games like Shadow of War, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, RAGE 2, and so many more had them. Worst of all were loot boxes, which were dominating multiplayer releases for a good chunk around 2016-2017, made even worse when they often turned to pay-to-win mechanics- though thankfully, thanks to widespread pushback from audiences, games don’t seem to be pushing loot boxes as aggressively anymore.
