GEARS OF WAR 4
Gears of War as a series has lost quite a bit of its lustre this console generation, and Gears of War 4 felt the brunt of that dip for various reasons. Coming from a new studio as the first step in a new era for the series, there were many who felt that the game needed to make a statement, that it needed to do something special to not only announce The Coalition’s arrival with style, but also to take the franchise forward in meaningful ways. What we got a game that played it safe, that delivered exactly what we always expect out of Gears of War 4 (for the most part)- and that was exactly what proved to be one of the things the game got criticized for most. But though that criticism is easy to understand, we feel it unfairly shortchanges the strengths of the game. Gears of War 4 isn’t spectacular, but since when has more Gears been a bad thing, especially when “more Gears” means a thrilling, well-crafted campaign and a meaty, addictive multiplayer suite?
