By the time Super Mario Bros. 2, also known as The Lost Levels, rolled around, people had gotten familiar with the gameplay and all the tricks of the original game. One thing that people associated with power ups or extra lives, more than anything else, was the mushroom- something that holds true even today. What The Lost Levels did was very sneakily add a mushroom to the game that was actually detrimental to your progress. It made Mario smaller, took away his fire power up, or sometimes outright killed him. What’s more, it was not even that easily distinguishable from your regular mushrooms.
