Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft Respond To May NPD

Posted By | On 02nd, Jul. 2010

The May NPD figures were just unveiled today, and they firmly reaffirmed Nintendo’s vicegrip upon the market. With their hardware taking the Top 2 spots, and four of the Top 10 games being Nintendo games, Nintendo had a wonderful May, it seems.

Of course, Microsoft and Sony have a lot to cheer about too, as the multiplatform title Red Dead Redemption sold a staggering 1.5 million copies across the Xbox 360 and the PS3. Out of this,  945,900 were the Xbox 360 version, while the remaining were the PS3 version.

The exact breakdown is given below:

The Big 3 have each responded to what the May NPD figures imply:

Said NoA executive Cammie Dunaway”

“These May results show that consumers are really responding to the value proposition of our new Wii configuration that now includes Wii Sports Resort and a Wii MotionPlus accessory.

“May also saw the launch of two great games: Super Mario Galaxy 2 for Wii and Picross 3D for Nintendo DS. They preface the steady drumbeat of big games for the second half of 2010 we announced at the E3 Expo that will keep fans engaged and having fun”.

Microsoft noted the low sales all around during May, noting that it was typically a slow month sales wise, but also trumpeted the fact that four of the games in the Top 10 were Xbox 360 games, whilst adding that the unprecedented software attach rate of the Xbox 360 (8.9) ensured that Microsoft revenues do not die down.

They went on to express optimism that the new Xbox 360 Slim, launched mid June, would propell them back to the Number One spot.

Sony maintained a cheery exterior, but declined to comment on the sales theselves at all, concentrating instead on the impending Fall launch of the PS Move, while also trumpetting the PS3’s 3D capabilities:

“While tight inventory had an impact on sales numbers in recent months, we are now beginning to experience greater availability of product and are looking forward to this fall’s most anticipated launch, PlayStation Move,” commented Patrick Seybold for Sony.

“When PlayStation Move launches consumers will have access to a compelling line-up of motion-control titles that will appeal to casual and core gamers and, in the months that follow, a new line-up of AAA hardware sellers previewed at E3 will arrive on PS3 including Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 3, Twisted Metal and inFamous 2.”
