For decades, video games stuck to a set of underlying rules, primarily that you must fight and often kill the bad guy to win. Toby Fox’s Undertale emerged as a desire to completely overturn those rules, resulting in a game where your every decision, even the battles you engage in, profoundly impacts the story. Beyond just the dialogue system, the combat also drew praise for its bullet hell-esque defensive mechanics and timed attacks leveraged in unexpected ways.
