SKIPPING CRITICAL DIALOGUE
Again, this doesn’t necessarily apply to open world games, but it can happen here with much greater frequency, because quite often, open world games have far more dialogue- and if the game isn’t doing a good enough job of holding your attention, skipping long exchanges between characters becomes very tempting (though of course, sometimes an accidental press of a button can do that as well). What stings is when you realize that you’ve accidentally skipped something critical, and now find yourself without that crucial information to work with. It’s even worse when this happens in games with dialogue choices, because when you do skip through parts of conversations, you find yourself having to pick a response to something you paid zero attention to.
