Windows 8 Store will sell PEGI 18 rated games starting this December

Microsoft clarifies that it was just a mix-up

Users who were previously worried that the Windows 8 store will not be selling PEGI 18-rated games can now relax- Microsoft’s announced that the store will start selling PEGI 18 games starting December. Windows 8 will launch today, so you still won’t be able to buy games like Mass Effect 3 and Skyrim for about a month.

Microsoft says that they “outlawed” PEGI 18-rated games because of some sort of a mix up- Microsoft translated ESRB Mature and ESRB Adult games to PEGI 16, whereas ESRB Adult games are actually PEGI 18 games. PEGI 18 games are very common, and usually rated for adults due to semi-nudity.

“It basically ends up disqualifying games that would be ESRB Mature,” explains Microsoft’s Windows Corporate VP of web services, Antoine Leblond.

He also wants to go on record to give “a heads up that that’s where we’re going, so they can have the peace of mind around developing the kinds of games that will have those ratings”.
