Windows 8 Sells More Than 40 Million Licenses

We’ve seen a ton of Windows 8 devices in the past couple of months, from the Windows Phone 8 interface to the terrible RT that occupies most low-budget ultrabook convertibles to the “hey, it’s not that bad” full Windows 8 experience. And if it seems like the OS is everywhere, that’s because it kind of is.

Tami Reller, chief financial officer and chief marketing officer at Microsoft, revealed at the Credit Suisse 2012 Annual Technology Conference that Windows 8 has currently sold more than 40 million licenses worldwide since it’s release a month ago.

“The journey is just beginning, but I am pleased to announce today that we have sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses so far,” stated Reller in an official blog post.

Of course, they didn’t offer a breakdown of just how many of these were free upgrades, retail purchases or licenses bundled with computers. Microsoft research vice president Wes Miller revealed also via Twitter that the Microsoft App Store currently has 21,000 apps and is growing at a rate of 500 new apps a day.
