The Last Guardian is ‘on hiatus,’ says Jack Tretton

New news on the troubled title.

The Last Guardian has become a bit of a running joke in the industry at this point, in the vein of Duke Nukem Forever.

Announced four years ago at Sony’s E3 as the next ambitious project by fan and critic favorites Team ICO as the follow up to the seminal Shadow of the Colossus, the Playstation 2 game. However, after its initial announcement, which admittedly took everyone by storm, the game disappeared from the public eye, with its absence at all official events, such as TGS and subsequent E3s, being puzzling. Sony’s refusal to talk about the game exacerbated matters, and amidst rumors, it emerged that the mastermind of the team, the auteur  Ueda had left the studio and Sony. It seemed like the game would forever languish in development hell.

Now some news has emerged for the game, and it is not exactly great news.

“I think the cool thing about our worldwide development studios is we have so many projects out there from so many great teams,” Jack Tretton said. “Projects never ultimately go away, so The Last Guardian has certainly not gone away, but it’s on hiatus right now.”

So the game is not in active development anymore… it sucks for fans of the studio who were looking forward to the game, but it is what it is.
