After reports that the latest firmware update 4.45 for Sony’s PlayStation 3 console was bricking consoles, Sony has responded by taking the update offline and investigating reports.

Speaking to Videogamer, an SCEE representative stated that the company was “aware of reports that the recent PlayStation 3 system software update (version 4.45) has caused the XMB to not display on a small number of PS3 systems. We have temporarily taken 4.45 offline and are investigating the cause of the problem. We will announce when the system update is available for download as soon as possible.”

Sony also “apologizes for the inconvenience” that has been caused, but that’s only half the story.

Posted last night, complaints started to roll in about users’ consoles not starting after downloading the update. So the other half is what caused the problem and whether those affected will be able to fix their consoles or will be reimbursed. More information on the story as it develops.
