Titanfall: Respawn Didn’t Set Out With “We’re Making a Shooter”

Producer Drew McCoy says it was a range of ideas that combined into a single vision.

Speaking to VG247, Respawn Entertainment producer Drew McCoy talked about how their upcoming first person shooter Titanfall managed to avoid many of the problems associated with Call of Duty and to just go about making an experience that didn’t feel last-gen.

“We didn’t have to say, ‘We’re making a shooter’. People pitched ideas that ranged the gamut. It literally was, ‘We’re going to make what we’re going to make’, and we hadn’t decided as a group what we were going to do, which at times was hard. We had 40 guys who all were very experienced game developers, and all having an equal voice, so how do you reconcile that into one singular vision that everyone’s excited to work on?”

Titanfall not only sees large mechs on the battlefield that players can pilot, but also features jet-packs and wall-running for navigation. The game also avoids killstreaks, perks and whatnot, presenting a straight-forward but still complex and highly intense experience. Titanfall is currently scheduled to release on Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC in 2014.
