New Unreal Engine Video Shows The Next Step In Character Aesthetics

An inside look into Unreal Engine 4's features.

Epic games released a new video showing Unreal Engine developers discussing the character aesthetics displayed by the Unreal Engine 4. The two discuss the Infiltrator tech demo which was released earlier this year in an attempt to show off what the Unreal Engine 4 is capable of.

The demo featured high dynamic range reflections, GQ particles with collision, material layers, and a whole host of other features. At the core of the character aesthetic is the new material system. Given a character model, the designer uses material layering to determine who the surfaces of that character model would react to light.

The video goes on to dissect the look of one specific character model used in the Infiltrator video. The entire process from concept to completion is broken down step by step, including some of the more creative decisions made by the artists collaborating with the developers.

We are then taken through the approach of creating the material layers that are then applied to the character models in order to add an entirely new level of realism.

From what’s displayed in this video, the Unreal Engine 4 applied to video game technology promises to be exactly that: Unreal.
