Sony’s PlayStation 4 has been selling at an insane rate. As of right now, it is actually the fastest selling console in history (yes, faster selling than even the PS2 or the Wii). How fast, you ask? Well, today at their Gamescom showing, Sony announced another sales milestone for their newest console: it has now shifted 10 million units worldwide. 10 million units, they were quick to point out, sold directly to consumers, not to retailers. That is an extremely impressive deal, especially when you consider that the PS4 itself has been out for less than ten months, meaning it is selling more than a million units a month.
How does this rack up against the competition? Well, Sony has sold more units than the Xbox One- the last figures we have for the Xbox One are from March 31, 2014, where it was announced that the console had shipped 5 million units worldwide. Meanwhile, Nintendo’s Wii U has 6.8 million units sold worldwide… and it also had a year’s headstart on the PS4. Yikes.
We might be looking at PS2-levels of domination again here, folks.
